Chris Sununu: Flexible retirement savings, and ensure Soc. Sec. solvency

Q: What would you do to reverse the trend of under saving for retirement?

Christopher T. Sununu: In order to encourage more saving, we need to provide financial flexibility through new and innovative programs that will boost & encourage savings. From reducing energy bills to lowering tax burdens, my campaign has centered on giving individuals the freedom to save more. Upward economic mobility becomes a reality when people have a wide range of incentives to save their hard-earned dollars. We should look at all possibilities, and one option is to examine tax-free savings plans, specifically, 529 plans for education. Furthermore, it is critical that we ensure Social Security's solvency, now and into the future.

Colin Van Ostern: The most effective thing a governor can do to enhance retirement security is to help businesses thrive and create good jobs so that people are in a position to save for their retirement.

Colin Van Ostern: Focus on good jobs so people can save for retirement

Q: What would you do to reverse the trend of under saving for retirement?

Colin Van Ostern: The most effective thing a governor can do to enhance retirement security is to help businesses thrive and create good jobs so that people are in a position to save for their retirement. As a state, we must always be looking for opportunities to assist our residents in saving for retirement. As governor I will strengthen job training programs so our people have the skills they need to get a good job; invest in infrastructure which creates construction jobs and the means for goods and services to be transported; and reduce college loan debt so that young workers can start saving for their retirement earlier.

Gary Bauer: Relieve tax burden via smaller retirement benefits

Q: You propose an immediate 20% in the Social Security payroll tax. When the system is poised to go broke in the year 2012, how can you justify cutting the revenue stream that assures retirees their benefits? A: The Social Security is in so much trouble [because] politicians in both parties have been stealing the system blind to pay for their pet projects. We can do to ease the burden on current workers is to give them a 20% tax cut in exchange for a slightly smaller Social Security benefit when they re

Gary Bauer: Preserve social security by reform without privatization

Q: There are a lot of senior citizens who don't understand your plan and who fear that the money won't be there for them. A: I can't imagine a senior citizen fearing my plan. The plans they ought to fear are the privatization plans that say that current workers can all withdraw their current payments. It's the current payments that's paying the checks of current retirees. I will preserve the Social Security system. It's worked well and it's served the elderly in this country.

George W. Bush: Keep promise to retirees but consider raising retirement age

We need to take all the payroll taxes aiming for Social Security and dedicate it to only Social Security. We need personal savings accounts for younger workers. We're going to keep our solemn commitment to people who've retired regarding benefits. I definitely wouldn't [raise the benefit age] on people near retirement. I hope we're able to keep the benefits the same for younger workers, as well. But the key thing is to have a leader to bring people together to solve the Social Security system.

Rick Santorum: Means testing: reduce benefits for wealthy seniors

GOV. HUNTSMAN: [to Santorum]: On entitlements, across the board, I will tell the upper income category in this country that there will be means testing. There are a lot of people in this nation who don't need Social Security and Medicare.

SANTORUM: I would agree with Governor Huntsman about means testing. We have to make sure that we're not going to burden future generations with a Social Security program that's underfunded. It's underfunded right now. And we have to take those who have been successful who are seniors who have a tremendous amount of wealth and we ought to reduce benefits. It makes no sense for folks who are struggling right now to pay their payroll tax which is the biggest tax--it's tax on labor, makes us uncompetitive--and the idea that some on the left would have to raise those taxes to make labor even more uncompetitive for those working people who are trying to get a job to subsidize high-income seniors doesn't make any sense to me.

Steve Forbes: Raising retirement age betrays promise to American retirees

The retirement age has already been raised from 65 to 67. That's a betrayal. Now what are they going to raise it to? 70? 75? That's not fair to the people. They were made a promise, and it should be kept. We should have a real debate on getting a new system, where we take it out of the hands of Washington politicians. And if you want to retire at 65, or 85, you can. Put it in your hands. Have your Social Security taxes, the vast majority, go to your own retirement account
