John Ashcroft on Technology

Former Attorney General; Former Republican Senator (MO)

Microsoft has a monopoly share of the market

Ashcroft probably won’t tell the government to halt entirely its antitrust case against Microsoft. Ashcroft is one of the most tech-savvy senators, and was one of the first to have a Web page. In a 1998 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, he he took a very skeptical view of some of the company’s business practices and noted it had a “monopoly share of the market.”

Fight off bureaucratic regulations to promote technology

No entrepreneurs are more important to the economic expansion than the information companies that create computers and computer software. [I call for] protecting intellectual property rights, blocking efforts to tax transactions on the Internet, and fighting off bureaucrats who would promulgate regulations and red tape, rather than promote technology. Washington should nourish the growth of the high-tech economy, not impede it with new taxes, new regulation, and new government controls.
