Tuition assistance & tax exemption for military & veterans

Gov. Burgum released the following statement in observance of Veterans Day: "The current conflicts overseas and the crisis on our own southern border are daily reminders that a strong military is absolutely necessary to maintain peace through strength, and that has only been possible through the service and sacrifice of our military veterans," Burgum said.

Exempt military pay, and military retirement pay, from state income tax for active duty, National Guard and Reserve members.
Allow North Dakota National Guard members who attend college out-of-state to qualify for State Tuition Assistance.
Allow child care providers licensed by the U.S. Department of Defense to operate in North Dakota with their DOD license.
Burgum also pushed for funding for a North Dakota Military Museum.

Budgeted to create a North Dakota Military Museum

When telling the North Dakota story, it cannot be done without highlighting our military members. Included in the executive budget is a public/private Military Museum, right here on the Capitol grounds connected to the Heritage Center. The inspirational service and sacrifice of our military members is deserving of a peaceful setting where current and future generations of North Dakotans can learn about and reflect upon the incredible legacy of those men and women in uniform. Make North Dakota the most military-friendly state

We've worked with lawmakers to exempt military retirement pay from state income tax, because those who serve their country have already paid society's tab. We also extended the exemption to surviving spouses. It helps promote workforce participation. It will help those that have served in the military in North Dakota to choose to perhaps retire here. State income tax exemption on military retirement pay

We're pleased to see proposed legislation that would grant occupational licensing reciprocity to military spouses. Making North Dakota more military-friendly is key to solving our workforce shortage. Our budget proposes a 100 percent state income tax exemption on military retirement pay to encourage more veterans to stay and work in North Dakota. We should thank our veterans for their service not only with our words--but with our actions--as they certainly have earned it. And let us always remember that since 9-11, we've had North Dakota National Guard members continuously deployed in harm's way, defending our freedoms. Need strong deterrent against rogue nations

The Minot Air Force Base, it's not only critical to our local economy in a time where we still have unfortunately global tensions and potentially global nuclear tensions which are again an unthinkable thing that I thought I could maybe quit thinking about from the 60's and 70's when we were kids and doing the drills. It's very important for our country and for all freedom loving people everywhere that we have a strong deterrent when we have rogue nations that are threatening nuclear activity.
