Kathleen Sebelius on Budget & Economy

Democratic KS Governor

Erased $1.1 billion budget deficit without raising taxes

Sebelius’s biggest strength is the fact that she’s one of the most competent executive of any of the rumored Democratic veep candidates. The fact that, as governor, she erased a $1.1 billion budget deficit in her first year of office without raising taxes, and later steered a large education-funding package through a fractious legislature, would suggest that she’s perfectly capable of heading up the executive branch--and doing it well.

Economy requires urgent action & sustained attention

Our struggling economy requires urgent and immediate action, and then sustained attention. Families can’t pay their bills. They are losing their jobs, and now are threatened with losing their homes.

We heard that Congress and the President are acting quickly, on a temporary, targeted stimulus package. That is encouraging. But you and I know that a temporary fix is only the first step toward meeting our challenges and solving our problems. There is still more to be done.

Uncovered $159 million in wasteful government spending

Fiscal discipline and accountability have been the hallmarks of Kathleen Sebelius’ leadership as Governor of Kansas.

It began with Governor Sebelius keeping her pledge to perform a top-to-bottom audit of state government--an effort that to date has uncovered $159 million in wasteful government spending, and led to new efficiencies that produced over $1 billion in budget savings on behalf of Kansas taxpayers.
