Martha Coakley on Budget & Economy

Economic system spiraling out of control; go after Wall St.

Coakley said that the nation has "great insecurity" about the future. She noted that Pres. Obama invited her to Washington last week because she is one of four prosecutors nationwide who had tackled financial institutions that contributed to the economic crisis. "We are frankly in a mess," she said. "We have an economic system that is spiraling out of control. I think we want someone who is going to go after the Wall Street that created the economic situation, as well as lack of regulation in Washington.

Increase safe, affordable housing; end predatory lending

Coakley has championed the fight against predatory mortgage lenders that sold unfair loans. Martha was the 1st Attorney General to file civil rights claims against subprime mortgage lenders for targeting African-American & Latino borrowers with risky loa products and charging them more for loans. In Washington, Martha will take action to end discriminatory practices and ensure that banks, lenders and financial institutions play by the rules, and treat customers fairly and equally.

Coakley has successfully pursued hundreds of landlords and companies that discriminated against people seeking housing. As Attorney General, she has recovered damages for victims of housing discrimination, assisted tenants in foreclosed properties in finding housing, and required property owners to clean up lead paint hazards to make housing units safer for children. In Washington, Martha will pursue policies & action to end housing discrimination and to find ways to increase safe, affordable housing

Every economic crisis statistic has a name and a story

Today we in Massachusetts and those across the country face multiple and serious challenges: our economy remains stuck in severe recession; too many have lost homes, or jobs or both; too many more are at risk of losing them. Every one of those statistics has a name and personal story of loss and insecurity.

State and local governments face fiscal crisis; the cost of our health care system is on an unsustainable upward curve, yet seems to defy consensus on reform.
