George Lemieux on Homeland Security

Indefinitely hold US citizens if they are terrorists abroad

Q: NDAA--for or against? [The National Defense Authorization Act includes a provision for the indefinite detention of suspected terrorists].

A: I am for most of the bill. However, when it comes to the detention of folks, in no way should any American be detained without the right to a lawyer and a right to go before a judge even if they are accused of terrorism. I will make the distinction though, that if an American travels outside of the US to aid our enemies, those rights should not apply to him.

Supports U.S. Missile shield systems in Eastern Europe

Q: U.S. Missile shield systems in Eastern Europe: For or against?

A: I support it. What President Obama did was wrong when he ended President Bush's plan to deploy a U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe. Iran is a perfect reason why that shield is needed. We took some of the components of that shield to Turkey, but we need a land-based and a sea-based missile defense shield to defend Europe and Israel.

World peace comes when America is unrivaled militarily

I believe in a strong national defense. Peace comes to our world when America is unrivaled militarily and unafraid of taking a leadership role in supporting democratic nations and those nations that yearn for freedom. President Obama's policy of "engagement" has failed. When the U.S. looks weak our friends don't know they can trust us and our enemies are emboldened. Dialogue and unilateral concessions with dictators and tyrants is no way to secure our nation or conduct foreign policy.
