Bruce Lunsford on Education

Democratic Senate challenger

Fight for full funding of special education programs

Special education students have the same right to a quality public education as other students, including access to appropriate curriculum, teachers qualified to provide them the special attention they need, and proper evaluation of their individual academic abilities. Kentucky has repeatedly failed to receive its full share of special education funding from Washington & as a result, our special education students & teachers pay the price. We must fight for full funding of special education programs

Provide a strong education in math and science

Kentucky is facing a crisis. Our students are underperforming, especially in the fields of math and science, in comparison with children from other states and the rest of the world. Today, competition comes from all over the world. In the new economy, in which technology, communication and information systems, and science are so important, Kentucky's children need better tools and education. Kentucky's schools, colleges and universities must provide a strong education in math and science.

Open the doors to higher education

McConnell has stood in the way of long-overdue increases in student aid programs, preventing more students from going to college. We can do better. We can help more students afford college by passing a tuition tax credit to help ease the burden on workin families. For those students who need additional funding, we must increase funding for the Pell Grant program. We should work to simplify the financial aid application process to increase the number of students who apply for and receive aid.

Early investment equals future success

Investing in early childhood education must be one of our top priorities. When I ran for Governor last year, I proposed creating a universal pre-kindergarten program with a strong and developmentally appropriate curriculum. The plan also afforded local control, as well as flexibility for communities, parents, and teachers to implement the program. I will fight for these same ideas in Washington. I want as many Kentucky children as possible to benefit from early childhood education.

Fundamentally overhaul "No Child Left Behind"

The so-called "No Child Left Behind" education law, suffers from flaws, false assumptions, unintended consequences, and botched implementation. Test results alone cannot tell us what we need to know about school performance. Our schools are required to adhere to strict, one-size-fits-all policies, which do not take into account the individual needs of Kentucky's schools and students. At the same time, our schools do not receive sufficient resources from the federal government to meet their goals.
