2000 National Political Awareness Test: on Families & Children

Scott Howell: Restrict minors' access to TV, movies, and Internet

Q: Do you believe there has been a decline in moral and ethical standards in America over the last four decades?

A: Yes. As a state senator, I utilized my powers to promote parental responsibility and societal concern towards the entertainment impact upon Utah's children. Through a resolution I passed, I was able to motivate local theaters to enforce restrictive ratings on movies. Another resolution I passed urges television networks to air violent programs only late at night. I also passed SB 243 (Minor's Access to Harmful Material on the Internet) amending provisions defining "material harmful to minors" to include material available through the Internet.

Gary Bauer: Pro-marriage & virtue; anti-porn & Hollywood promiscuity

Bauer agrees that there has been a decline in moral and ethical standards in America over the last four decades. He says, “I believe our next president must address America’s virtue deficit. I will work to restore a climate where reliable standards of right and wrong matter again. I will invite Hollywood producers to the Oval Office and urge them to stop producing programs that glorify promiscuity and violence, while mocking religious beliefs and traditional values. If necessary, I will publicly shame those who produce such fare. I will keep criminals behind bars, fight to put drug dealers out of business, protect children from pornography, keep our commitments to veterans and senior citizens, and strengthen marriage as the cornerstone of our society.“ Regarding technology, Bauer says, ”Steps should be taken to protect children from being exposed to pornographic or violent content.“

Steve Forbes: Celebrate marriage; support it via tax cuts & other policy

[One of my top priorities is to] reaffirm the sanctity of marriage. My wife, Sabina, and I have been married 28 years. I will use the “bully pulpit” to celebrate marriage, abolish the marriage tax penalty, cut taxes, and make it easier for families to spend more time together. [I will] reinforce the essential role of parents in raising children. I’ll fight for parental freedom to choose schools that reinforce moral and spiritual values being taught at home.
