Governor's State of the State speeches, early 2000s: on Environment

Tim Kaine: Invest in ongoing work to clean up rivers & Chesapeake Bay

Virginia's citizens enjoy an impressive array of natural resources that we are bound to protect. In fact, Virginia's Constitution only mentions two of the many functional areas of government as mandatory. responsibilities--education and protection of the environment. That commitment has never been more important. This year, we must make an historic investment in the ongoing work to clean up the Chesapeake Bay and to improve the quality of Virginia's rivers. The introduced budget contains a $232 million allocation for water clean-up. Together with recently approved regulations concerning waste treatment plants, this investment will pay dividends in protection of future generations' ability to enjoy our waterways and have clean drinking water. I will also submit a budget amendment to dedicate special revenue to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries that can be used for wildlife management, land conservation, recreation, and critical habitat protection.

George Pataki: Preserve & enhance our natural treasures for future

When I took office back in 1995, I saw a future New York that was cleaner, safer, and more prosperous than ever before.

I saw our next generation of New Yorkers enjoying a wealth of wondrous natural treasures--preserved, protected, and enhanced for future generations to cherish.

Together, we've secured an inheritance of nearly one million acres of protected open space for the next generation of New Yorkers and a Hudson River that is far cleaner and more vital than when we found it.

Phil Bredesen: Public-private foundation to preserve Cumberland Plateau

The Cumberland Plateau is one of the most beautiful and biologically diverse places on the planet, and yet it is being clear cut, vast tracts of land owned by timber companies are on the market, and in many cases are being bought by speculators from out of state. I am proposing the establishment of a public-private foundation, perhaps called the Cumberland Plateau Foundation, that can preserve these lands for the future. I have placed in the budget $10 million of one-time money to start the process.

I want to expand the vision in the years ahead to other areas as well, areas like the Mississippi River Corridor, the Appalachians, the river valleys and others. Outdoor spaces are important to our people's health, they are important to the preservation of our heritage, and to attracting people who will create jobs. My dream is that a generation from now, our children and grandchildren will have protected land for their use, for enjoying the beauty of God's creation here in Tennessee.

George Pataki: Majestic Hudson flows cleaner than it has in generations

We have applied our philosophy of bold, sweeping change to the preservation and protection of our environment and our state's natural treasures. When I was a boy, I could admire one of these treasures--the Hudson River--from our family farm in Peekskill. I still remember how different the view was from my grandfather's porch, which was only a few feet from the riverbank. The tragic effects of a century's worth of neglect and abuse were all too apparent.

We chose to take a fundamentally different approach to environmental conservation, and by working together over the last decade we've made New York a national leader. We've reclaimed industrialized waterfronts across the State, transforming them from forgotten dumping grounds into the proud gateways of our communities.

We've dedicated more resources to cleaning-up and protecting the environment than ever before, including our $1.75 billion Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act. Today, the majestic Hudson flows cleaner than it has in generations.

Christie Todd Whitman: Protect clean water via watershed management plans

We know that clean air is invaluable, and we must safeguard it. We know that clean water is priceless, and we must protect our watersheds. Unfortunately, as New Jersey has poured more concrete & cut down more woodlands, we have put watersheds at risk. The State has set up a process to establish watershed management plans.
