$3M for more local domestic violence shelters
A safety issue that demands our attention is the silent sickness of our society known as domestic violence. For too long, much of this abuse has been kept hushed up behind locked doors because women are afraid to report it. Some feel some misguided sense
of shame as if they have asked to be battered. Or they simply don’t know where to turn. And the effect of this abuse is even more devastating on the children in these families.Only 46 of our state’s 114 counties have domestic violence centers and
support for battered women and their children. What is truly shocking about the situation is the number of women and children turned away. I strongly recommend an additional $3 million for local domestic violence shelters next fiscal year.
[I also propose] a task force to develop a strategic action plan for how we can coordinate and integrate our approach to domestic violence, based on needs and priorities.

Angus King:
Best state to raise children; model for America’s Promise
Maine is now generally considered one of the best states in the country in which to raise a child. Just today, I received a letter from Colin Powell informing us that we have been chosen by America’s Promise as one of three model states in the nation for
our work on behalf of children. Powell stated that “a great deal of your work represents best practices” that other states can follow. I am tonight accepting Powell’s offer - and Maine will be among the first states to make manifest America’s Promise.

Mike Huckabee:
Supports “covenant marriage”
We’ll propose initiatives in the area of divorce reform, hoping to see that people will have the option in this state of a covenant marriage where they can have more information.
Back to school, if you will, making a deeper commitment. It will be their option. Shouldn’t we give people the option of making that marriage vow even stronger?

More restrictions on teenage driving
Forty years ago, when we had all of those dirt roads in the Atlanta region, it made sense to give a teenager the keys to the family car the day he turned 16 years old. Today, with traffic that often allows no margin for error, it is a recipe for tragedy.
I think the time has come to take some common sense steps to protect our teens. We need to limit the number of teenage passengers a young driver can carry. We need to impose stricter curfews. And we need to ensure that our young people have the
experience they need before getting behind the wheel of a car without an adult to help them. I agree that any teenager should have 40 hours of supervised driving before they can get a license and why I think that teens driving in metro-Atlanta
should be 17 before they can drive alone in these heavily congested areas.
The only excuse I’ve heard to any of these teen driving proposals is that it may cause some inconvenience. I ask you to consider them carefully because they save lives.
