Bob Wise: Protect steel industry from illegal imports

My priority in working with our delegation in Washington will be to stop the destruction of the steel industry by illegal imports. West Virginia’s steel industry has developed efficient processes and adapted to the new international marketplace. But it can’t survive against an onslaught of subsidized and underpriced steel from abroad. This country must have a strong and vibrant steel industry to remain an industrial power - and West Virginia will be a part of it.

Bob Wise: Require use of US steel in state-funded projects

One step we can take, immediately, to preserve steel jobs, is to require the use of U.S. made steel in state-funded projects. I have prepared a bill to do just that. I respectfully urge you to take up this legislation at the start of business tomorrow, and to move it through both houses of this Legislature in record time. I promise to sign it the minute it arrives on my desk. We’re in this fight, and we’re in it to win...for West Virginia.

Judy Martz: Trade as “sister-states” in Japan, China, & Taiwan

Our sister-state relationships with Kumamoto, Japan, and Taiwan, have given Montanans ever-growing economic trade opportunities for Montana businesses. Our new sister-state relationship with Guangxi, China will help us build close cultural understandings and economic ties with over one billion Chinese consumers. We are becoming an important player in one of the most significant economic arenas in the world. And I will build better relations and economic opportunities with our Canadian neighbors.

Dirk Kempthorne: Double Idaho’s exports

The Advisory Committee on International Trade is working to develop a strategic plan to expand Idaho’s trading opportunities. We are making progress. When I took office, I challenged [our state government] to double the value of Idaho’s exports by the end of 2002. Since January of 1999, we’ve seen a 61-percent increase in export value - more than a billion dollars. Canada; Mexico; Asia - we’ve already been there. And we literally have kicked open the doors in these markets.

Jane Dee Hull: Proud of all-time record trade levels with Mexico

While we work hard at home, we cannot forget we are in the global economy and we cannot forget our neighbor to the south. We have a long history of cooperation and commerce with Mexico and I am proud that we continue to build on that tradition. In fact, in the last year, we set an all-time record of trade with Mexico. Our exports totaled nearly $3.5 billion, up approximately 50% from the prior year. While I differ [with Mexican Pres. Fox] on some specifics, we share a goal of progress along our border.
