2001 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Welfare & Poverty

Frank Keating: Able-bodied people must stand on their own two feet

This legislature passed welfare reform, which I signed. And welfare rolls are down by over 70% in Oklahoma. We are not saying, in a mean spirited way, that we’re not in a position to help those who are frail or elderly or incapable of helping themselves. What we are saying is if you are able-bodied, if you can take care of yourself, it is your responsibility as a human being to stand on your own two feet and contribute to the economic vitality of our state. Welfare reform has worked in Oklahoma.

Judy Martz: Sell used state vehicles to welfare families

Welfare reform has made great strides in overcoming the myth that parents on welfare don’t want to work. We must expand our successful child-care programs for low-income families. We have a bill in the legislature that will buy used state vehicles and sell them to participants in Families Achieving Independence in Montana at an affordable price and reasonable payment schedule.

Jim Geringer: Work First: move families to self-sufficiency

I support the “Work First” initiative for Wyoming’s workforce through the realignment of related programs into a new Department of Workforce Services. [I support] the Wyoming Work First Steering Committee and the creation of a department that will consolidate training, employment, TANF, and food stamp programs within a single welfare and workforce entity. The focus of this new department will be moving families to self-sufficiency.
