Survey of 2006 House campaign websites: on Abortion

Bruce Braley: Federal Funding for Stem Cell Research

Increase and Allow Federal Funding for Stem Cell Research. Bruce believes that it is common sense medicine to allow and increase federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Stem cell research provides hope for millions of Americans suffering from currently incurable diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and juvenile diabetes. It is time to invest in stem cells’ huge medical potential.

Bruce Braley: Uphold Roe v. Wade; no criminalization of medical decisions

Bruce supports the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade and believes it is settled law. Bruce believes that the government should expand access to family planning education. Bruce supports choice because there are circumstances where women and their physicians should be able to make difficult decisions without government interference. The federal government should not criminalize the personal medical decisions made between a woman and her doctor.

David Davis: Life begins at conception

I believe that life is the greatest gift that God has given us. I believe that life begins at conception, that every human-being is created in the image of God, and that it is government’s role to protect the defenseless. I will continue my work to encourage and promote adoption.

Dennis Kucinich: Women’s right-to-choose is essential to gender equality

A woman’s right-to-choose must be protected as essential to personal privacy and gender equality. Only those who agree to uphold Roe v. Wade should be nominated for the Supreme Court. I have a plan to reduce abortions by encouraging family planning, including abstinence training, combined with a full economic and health care plan that would clearly alleviate the number of abortions. Voters have a choice for a real plan to reduce the number of abortions with a program of economic justice.

Ed Perlmutter: Women’s right to reproductive freedom is in jeopardy

I worry that a woman’s right to reproductive freedom is in jeopardy in this Nation. And when elected I will be a strong voice for a woman’s right to reproduction freedom. There is no room for the government in decisions between a woman and her doctor.

Harry Mitchell: Fundamental right to choose when to have children

I believe that every person has a fundamental right to choose when and whether to have children, and I support a woman’s right to choose. Medical decisions, both reproductive & otherwise, should be made between families and their doctors--it is not the role of government to interfere with these decisions.

We should work together to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. This can be done by supporting sex education for our kids, preventing teen pregnancy, and providing access to pre-natal care.

Harry Mitchell: Invest in Stem Cell Research

I believe that Americans can best honor life by using research and science to discover treatments for the millions who suffer from a wide array of diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Congress recently passed the bipartisan Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which would have expanded the number of embryonic stem cell lines available to U.S. researchers. President Bush vetoed that bill. The debate to save lives should be an issue of science, not politics.

Heath Shuler: Pro-life; all life is sacred

I am a pro-life Democrat and I believe that all life is sacred. I also believe that a commitment to life extends beyond the womb and means ensuring that all people have adequate health care, receive a strong education, and be given proper care in their later years.

Jerry McNerney: Supports embryonic stem cell research

Embryonic stem cell research offers tremendous promise to end the suffering of millions of patients with cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases and disorders. I support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Jerry McNerney: I support a woman’s right to choose

I support a woman’s right to choose, and I will vote to protect it. Let’s face it, no one likes abortions. The best thing we can do is provide meaningful education and prevention, and to ensure that working families make living wages and have access to affordable health care and affordable child care so that women and young families do not have to choose between poverty and abortion.

Jim Jordan: Unwavering commitment to protect sanctity of human life

Jim Jordan was named Pro-Life legislator of the Year and won the Defender of Life award for his unwavering commitment to protecting the sanctity of human life. He is a trusted leader on family issues like defending traditional marriage and giving parents the tools they need to help build a brighter future for their children.

Joe Donnelly: Pro-life from conception until natural death

In keeping with my personal faith and family values, I have consistently opposed abortion and will continue to do so in Congress. I believe that being pro-life means promoting life at every stage, from conception until natural death. I will always vote according to my faith and my conscience on life issues.

Joe Sestak: Supports Roe v. Wade

Regardless of my religious beliefs, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Roe vs. Wade that - as a nation - the United States should offer every woman the right to have a legal and safe abortion, if that is her choice. I support that decision.

John Hall: Safe, legal abortion regardless of income

I believe that health care is a right and should be guaranteed for all Americans. I believe that a woman’s reproductive issues are her own to make. I believe that Congress has a responsibility to provide basic health services for all, regardless of income, without discrimination, including contraception and safe, legal abortion.

John Sarbanes: Stand firm in support of a woman’s right to choose

A woman’s right to choose is under assault in the Republican-led Congress. George Bush is simply wrong when he says Roe v. Wade “was a reach” and “overstepped constitutional bounds.” Consistent with Roe v. Wade, our society must stand firm in its support of a woman’s right to choose. A woman’s decision about whether to carry her pregnancy to term is a private one - to be made, ideally, after consultation with her doctor and with the benefit of counseling that is provided in a non-coercive setting.

Keith Ellison: I am pro choice

I am pro choice. I am in favor of comprehensive sex education, which includes information about abstinence, but goes far beyond that. I am against legislation that would impose a waiting period on women who seek a safe and legal abortion, and I am against legislation that would restrict the information that a physician can share with a patient regarding reproductive choices.

Mary Fallin: I have always been pro-life

I have always been pro-life, and I am glad that the pendulum is finally swinging back to common sense on this vital issue. More and more Americans are coming to realize that a society that fails to protect the most vulnerable is not a healthy society at all. I support efforts in our state legislature and in Congress to prohibit partial birth abortion and to require parental notification when minors seek abortions. I am hopeful that one day soon the courts will re-examine and reverse Roe v. Wade.

Michael Arcuri: Woman’s right to choose is Constitutionally protected

Mike on a Woman’s Right to Choose... “The Constitution protects an individual’s right to privacy. I support a woman’s right to choose.”

Michael Arcuri: Support stem cell research

Mike on Stem Cell Research... “Stem cell research provides hope to those suffering life threatening and debilitating diseases. I support stem cell research and would oppose any unreasonable attempts to restrict this research and deny hope to those suffering life threatening and debilitating diseases.”

Michele Bachmann: Respect the sanctity of life

I firmly believe in moving toward and promoting a culture that values and respects the sanctity of life - especially those rights of the unborn and the elderly. We must protect infants at their most vulnerable stages and never overlook the weakest and most frail among us.

As a foster mother to 23 at-risk children, I applaud the work of those who reach out to assist those most in need of care.

Patrick Joseph Murphy: Roe vs. Wade has been settled law for 30 years

Patrick is Pro-Choice. As a former professor of Constitutional Law, he understands that the right to privacy is guaranteed by the United States Constitution, and that Roe vs. Wade has been settled law for 30 years. He believes we should also work to make abortion safe, legal and rare by promoting comprehensive sex education and encouraging alternatives such as adoption.

Patrick Joseph Murphy: Full federal funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Patrick supports full federal funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research. It was American ingenuity that cured polio, and we have long produced the world’s most advanced medical research. By failing to fully fund further research of this scientific breakthrough, we run the risk of falling behind other nations in the race to cure life threatening illnesses.

Peter Welch: Abortion decision should be between a woman and her doctor

I support a woman’s right to choose. This is a decision that should be between a woman and her doctor. I believe we must take politics out of the issue of choice, focus on reducing and preventing the need for abortions, require pharmacists to honor prescriptions for birth control issued by a woman’s doctor, and help improve birth control coverage by insurance companies. I believe abortion should be safe, legal, and rare.

Steve Cohen: Keep pregnancy termination a woman’s decision

For 24 years I have been an unwavering advocate for women’s issues in the Legislature and have been recognized for my commitment and effectiveness by the Memphis Women’s Political Caucus.

I have always believed that the decision to terminate a pregnancy is one of the most serious decisions a woman can make. I know it is not a decision made lightly. It certainly is not a decision that should be made by the legislature. I will continue to ensure that it remains just that - a woman’s decision.

Tim Walberg: Strongly pro-life

Tim Walberg is strongly pro-life. When he first ran for public office his platform included an end to the public funding of abortions and Tim encouraged positive alternatives to abortion that ministered to the needs of desperate teens and adults. His consistent efforts earned for him the “Advocate for Life” award from Michigan Right to Life. Tim is endorsed by Right to Life of Michigan and National Right to Life.

Vern Buchanan: Defend the sanctity of life

Defend the Sanctity of Life: I am pro-life. I will work hard to defend life from conception to natural death. I oppose embryonic stem cell research and think we should instead encourage use of adult stem cells or umbilical cord cells. I support parental notice and consent and oppose partial birth abortion. I oppose federal funding of abortion. I will work to promote traditional family values and I will be a strong defender of life.

Zack Space: Supports embryonic stem cell research, but regulated

Stem cell research holds the promise of ending the suffering of millions of Americans. I do believe that there are moral issues attendant to any consideration of stem cell research policies. Our government should regulate research facilities to ensure that embryonic stem cells are handled in a dignified, responsible, and ethical manner. However, chronic, and often times fatal conditions such as juvenile diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer may realistically be cured through this research.
