On Civil Rights: Supports pay equity and opposes glass ceiling

In 1999, Sutton introduced pay equity legislation. “Pay equity is about basic fairness and justice and it’s also about basic family economics,” Sutton said.

In January 2002, Sutton and a colleague served as the lawyers for a Cleveland firefighter who sued a municipality for not promoting her simply because of her sex. The court ruled that the woman should be promoted and a jury awarded her damages.

On Health Care: Health care should be available to every person

Throughout her career, Betty Sutton has consistently fought for quality health care for her constituents, and believes that health care should be available to every person, regardless of income or employment. Sutton introduced the Patient Protection bill in 1998. The legislation was aimed at preventing health insurance companies from denying or delaying treatment that was covered by a patient’s policy. Sutton consistently worked to keep insurance lobbyists from making decisions about health care policy.

On War & Peace: Demand a timetable so we can bring our brave troops home

I believe Congress must take the lead and demand that a timetable be set for the Iraqi people to take control of their own country, so we can bring our brave troops home quickly and safely. Until we set a clear timetable for returning America’s military men and women home, the Iraqis will never take control of their own security.

I oppose President Bush’s misguided war. Bush misled the country into this tragic war. I oppose this war out of devotion to this country I love.
