Joe Donnelly: $8 trillion deficit is a hidden tax on all of us

In the last six years, the federal budget surplus has disappeared and been replaced by an enormous deficit, adding to a national debt now estimated at over $8 trillion. In Congress, I will be an independent voice for fiscal responsibility, resisting pressure on both sides of the aisle to run up huge deficits. In effect, these deficits are a hidden tax on all of us and we will pay the price for today’s spending if we don’t switch gears now and adopt a common-sense, fiscally conservative approach. Peter Roskam: 4-part plan to make Congress live within its means

I support a four-part plan to make Congress live within its means just like suburban families do!

Step 1: Immediately cut wasteful spending. Institute a 1% across-the-board cut on discretionary spending.
Step 2: Sunset outdated and inefficient federal programs. Require the regular review of federal programs.
Step 3: Implement comprehensive earmark reform to bring sunshine to the budget process.
Step 4: Reestablish PAYGO budget rules
