On Education: Vouchers fool us into abandoning our public school system

Education should not be a political football! Our country’s future is at risk, and we must invest in our schools & our children if we are to solve these problems. The right wing of the Republican party is trying to undermine our confidence in our public schools because they want to create a taxpayer funded voucher system for private education from K-12 . We must not be fooled into abandoning our school system. We need to fix problem schools, but we must make them stronger, not doom them to failure.

On Health Care: Medicare for all

America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, has a huge medical crisis. Our nation is the only country in the Western Democracies that does not provide health care for all of its people. There are several plans being talked about right now, and I certainly would support any bill that would alleviate the suffering, but the plan I favor is Medicare for all. America needs universal health care, and I will work in Congress for it.

On Civil Rights: Founding fathers didn’t yield to fear, and neither should we

The men who wrote our Constitution were no strangers to danger. They had seen their land under attack, and had struggled for years to defeat the enemy. If after all that, they had blundered and returned to monarchy, if they had given in to fear, they would never have written those incredible Amendments. They had to conquer fear, trust their fellow citizens, and still stay vigilant against all enemies. They peeked into the future and wrote a Constitution that is the envy of the world. They protected us against government misbehavior, because they understood human nature and government abuse of power.

Now we have a president and many legislators who believe that those laws don’t apply to them. They are spying on American citizens through electronic home invasion, snooping on phones and computers. They search the bank, phone, library and medical records of not just terrorists, but law abiding Americans. Most Americans, whether they are Conservative or Liberal, know that this is wrong.

On Energy & Oil: Substantial tax credits for energy saving cars & homes

Scientists and health officials are warning us about the greenhouse warming effect, melting glaciers, and dirty air, while automakers keep making larger cars with lower fuel efficiency. I will work to pass laws that reward good stewardship of the environment by offering substantial tax credits for energy saving cars, homes, and businesses. It’s essential for our environment and also for our national security, since some of our oil money is also being used against us in the Middle East. The government needs to now invest heavily in research and development, and I would promote the creation of an independent Institute, that resembles NASA in its early days, to set energy self-reliance goals. America’s current Energy plan, formulated in a back room by Dick Cheney and Big Oil, has thrown us into greater danger and higher energy prices. I will fight to create a plan that serves the people’s interests and promotes conservation and innovation.

On Tax Reform: GOP votes for the very wealthy top 1%

Some people in America are thriving. George Bush and the Republican leaders have consistently voted for the very wealthy, the top 1%, and against the rest of us. Unfair tax advantages, deceptively packaged as “cuts,” have helped the richest one percent of the country, who now hold 40% of the wealth. The loss of this vital tax money (an estimated 48% of the deficit is caused by the Bush tax cuts), coupled with an incredibly expensive war, have left the middle class struggling.

On War & Peace: Leave Iraq & abandon our “lone wolf” approach

We only create cynicism by saying that even though there were no WMD’s, we stayed there to create a democracy in Iraq. The world’s people can see that George Bush is very friendly with other non-democratic nations in that region, and so they suspect other motives. The United States must physically leave, abandon our “lone wolf” approach, and work with other nations to stabilize Iraq. Americans have spent billions on this unnecessary war only to see tragedy, fraud, and waste.
