On Civil Rights: Vigilance against restricting civil liberties

We need to be even more vigilant that we not restrict the civil liberties of those within our borders who abide by the laws of the land. We need to take special care that we not impinge upon the right of expression and the right of assembly by those who might have concerns about how the Bush administration is pursuing its mistaken policies in Iraq and other areas of the world. And we need to be sure that we do not blame whole communities of believers or nationalities for the misdeeds of a few.

On Civil Rights: Guarantee full civil rights for GLBT people

I believe it is important that we guarantee full civil rights and equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

On Energy & Oil: Energy policy that benefits the Midwest, not the Mideast

On Free Trade: Fair trade agreements should help open markets

It is time for fair trade agreements that help open markets abroad and guarantee labor and environmental protections in other countries. Iowa has suffered dramatically over the years as a result of Republican policies. We know that globalization has led to companies abandoning many communities in this part of the state. It is time to take stock of the effects of previous free trade agreements and place a moratorium on more such pacts that do not include the necessary labor and environmental provisions.

On Government Reform: Public campaign financing to end politics-as-usual

The most recent Republican ethics scandal involving Jack Abramoff only underscores the need to reform our political system to ensure that elected officials maintain the people’s trust in their government. So long as Washington continues with politics as usual, few of the changes we as a nation need to move us forward are likely to occur. One of the most important reforms we could enact as a nation would be public financing of congressional elections.

On Health Care: Work towards truly universal coverage

We are the richest people on earth and there is simply no excuse for the sad state of health care coverage today. It’s time to work towards truly universal coverage in America. At a minimum, we need to have a serious national dialogue about how we can get to universal coverage in the coming years. Numerous alternatives have been put forth in recent years and every option should be on the table, including some form of national health care. ALL options must be considered.

On Homeland Security: Bush ignoring FISA courts may constitute impeachable offense

It appears that George Bush broke the law when he skirted the 1978 Foreign Intelligence and Surveillance Act by refusing to go to a FISA court within 72 hours of tapping phone calls of US citizens with suspected terrorists. This possible significant violation of the civil liberties of American citizens is deeply disturbing and a full congressional investigation of the Bush administration activities is needed. I support investigating whether these actions constitute impeachable offenses.

On Social Security: I will never vote to privatize Social Security

I will never vote to privatize Social Security. The system is in need of significant reform but it is not in crisis. The Bush administration’s attempts to privatize this most vital and successful of social programs are misplaced and threaten the retirement security of millions of Americans. We know that Bush’s proposals will do nothing to remedy the long-term solvency problem and will only reduce benefits for recipients when they reach retirement age.

On War & Peace: Iraq war did not need to happen; disengage immediately

The situtation in Iraq: Nowhere has the failure of the Bush approach been more evident than in Iraq. This is a war that did not need to happen and one from which we should begin to disengage immediately. Our troops have successfully laid the groundwork for the Iraqis to construct a political system of their choosing. The costs of a continued U.S. presence will far outweigh any conceivable gains. Nor should the removal of American combat forces from Iraq be followed by any kind of permanent base.
