Betty Sutton: Six Principles to Fight Corruption in Washington

Betty Sutton’s plan to bring an end to Washington’s culture of corruption includes the following six points:
  1. The Junkets Must Go. Prohibit all privately financed travel.
  2. Reveal the Strings and Start Cutting Them. Prohibit lawmakers from accepting meals and gifts from registered lobbyists
  3. Open the People’s Business to the People
  4. No More Secret Gifts for Corporate Interests
  5. Slow Down the Revolving Door
  6. Remove Those Convicted of a Felony in Office from the Public Payroll.

Brad Ellsworth: Pass new ethics laws, but must also replace the lawbreakers

Listening to all this nonsense about lobbyists buying Congressmen and people switching their vote because someone wrote them a check, you’d think Washington was the most corrupt city in America. But the real problem isn’t in the laws, it’s in the criminals. We can pass new laws, and we will; but until we replace the people committed to breaking the law, we’ll never have real reform. Congress doesn’t belong to the politicians & it certainly doesn’t belong to the criminals. Congress belongs to us.

David Loebsack: Public campaign financing to end politics-as-usual

The most recent Republican ethics scandal involving Jack Abramoff only underscores the need to reform our political system to ensure that elected officials maintain the people’s trust in their government. So long as Washington continues with politics as usual, few of the changes we as a nation need to move us forward are likely to occur. One of the most important reforms we could enact as a nation would be public financing of congressional elections.

Joe Donnelly: Fight for real campaign finance reform & more transparency

Washington is mired in a culture of corruption. Cunningham and Delay resigned in disgrace, but the corruption continues. When the special interests take over and government turns into a Washington insider game, our values get left behind. I will be an independent voice in the House. That means fighting for real campaign finance reform, greater transparency on Capitol Hill, and more stringent enforcement of the House Code of Ethics.

Tim Mahoney: Clean up corruption: No gifts. No meals. No trips.

Tim Walz: Ban all privately funded congressional trips

The era of closed-door favors to insider lobbyists must come to an end, but we cannot rely on those that are part of the culture of corruption to police themselves. Walz will consistently vote to give the House ethics committee authority to investigate and indict members without the consent of party leadership. Additionally, Walz will vote to strengthen lobbyist registration rules, bar lobbyists from congressional chambers and ban all privately funded congressional trips.

Yvette Clarke: Supports public financing of congressional campaigns

We have to reduce the cost of campaigns. Abramoff & other lobbyists run Washington and both political parties, because of the high costs of campaigns. I support public financing of congressional campaigns. This will not only stop Congress from catering to the special interests, it will do a lot to reform the Democratic Party and bring it back to fighting for the average citizen.

Cynthia McKinney: Proposed proportional or instant runoff voting for Congress

McKinney introduced the following bill in the 109th Congress: H.R.2690: Voter Choice Act of 2005

Authorizes a state entitled to more than one Representative in Congress to establish a number of districts for election of Representatives that is less tha the number of Representatives to which the state is entitled, as long as the Representatives are elected:

  1. under a system meeting the constitutional standard of majority rule and of individuals having equal voting power;
  2. the system ensures the election of any candidate in a multiseat district who receives a share of votes cast that is at least one vote greater than one-third of the total number of votes cast in the district; and
  3. the number of residents per Representative is equal for all Representatives elected in the state.
Establishes a program under which the Election Assistance Commission shall make grants to eligible states to defray the costs of administering an instant runoff voting system or a proportional voting system
