On Abortion: Fundamental right to choose when to have children

I believe that every person has a fundamental right to choose when and whether to have children, and I support a woman’s right to choose. Medical decisions, both reproductive & otherwise, should be made between families and their doctors--it is not the role of government to interfere with these decisions.

We should work together to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. This can be done by supporting sex education for our kids, preventing teen pregnancy, and providing access to pre-natal care.

On Abortion: Invest in Stem Cell Research

I believe that Americans can best honor life by using research and science to discover treatments for the millions who suffer from a wide array of diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Congress recently passed the bipartisan Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which would have expanded the number of embryonic stem cell lines available to U.S. researchers. President Bush vetoed that bill. The debate to save lives should be an issue of science, not politics.

On Education: More funding for NCLD and IDEA

Unfortunately, Washington has shirked its responsibility to support adequately our schools. That’s especially true with the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation Congress passed in 2001. While I appreciate the intended goals behind NCLB, it has many shortcomings. Even though Congress passed NCLB, they have not adequately funded the programs, and Washington’s failure is putting serious strain on Arizona schools. Congress has also under-funded the Individual Disability Education Act (IDEA) of 1974.

On Energy & Oil: Oil dependence threatens long-term national security

The US is dangerously dependent on foreign sources of fuel, and our continued dependence on other nations for oil threatens our long-term national security. To promote energy independence, I believe we should:
  1. Use less oil; raise fuel efficiency standards.
  2. Generate fuel here; via renewable sources of energy such as wind, solar, & hydrogen.
  3. Prevent price gouging. I’ll work to make sure the American consumers are protected against price gouging by fuel providers.

On Health Care: Allow negotiations for lower Medicare prices

The refusal to allow negotiations for lower prices is a prime example of Congress and the administration putting the interests of the drug companies ahead of seniors. Meanwhile, instead of offering a real prescription drug benefit to Medicare, Congress allowed insurance companies to provide drug benefits rather than Medicare directly. They created a system of waste & inefficiency, which will be paid by beneficiaries & individual taxpayers, while insurance and pharmaceutical companies rake in billions.

On Immigration: No amnesty; secure our border

On Social Security: Serious overhaul like privatization is unneeded

Without question, Social Security is one of our nation’s most successful and important programs. In the years ahead, Social Security will face a challenge. But this challenge is not a crisis. While we do need to take steps to ensure Social Security’s sound financial footing, I do not believe it needs a serious overhaul like privatization. The last thing we need is radical Social Security privatization proposals that will undermine Social Security and cut guaranteed benefits.

On War & Peace: We need an exit plan; “stay the course” is just a slogan

The President and Congress have mismanaged the post-Saddam era in Iraq. And to this day, the Administration has not developed a plan for victory. Instead, we are operating an occupation in Iraq without a clearly defined mission, without vision and without an exit strategy. The current strategy of “stay the course” is not a plan--it’s a slogan, and it offers a dangerous open-ended commitment of more of the same failed policies.

It’s time to develop a plan in Iraq, and to establish benchmarks
