On Abortion: Pro-life; all life is sacred

I am a pro-life Democrat and I believe that all life is sacred. I also believe that a commitment to life extends beyond the womb and means ensuring that all people have adequate health care, receive a strong education, and be given proper care in their later years.

On Energy & Oil: Supports domestic renewable energy

My energy platform creates jobs, improves health, saves money, keeps our dollars at home and protects us from unstable foreign markets. Western NC is blessed with abundant sources of renewable energy. Yet, our state sends over $10 billion dollars out of state each year to important fossil fuels. Tapping into domestic renewable sources of energy and using energy more efficiently can create thousands of jobs in our region and keep our energy dollars here in our local economy.

On Free Trade: Fair trade laws protect American jobs

We cannot continue to stand idly by while our jobs keep going overseas because our Congress refuses to enact fair trade laws that protect American jobs, American workers, and American families. As your Congressman, I will always oppose unfair trade policies that are costing our families good paying jobs -- trade policies that make it harder and harder for companies that want to stay in America to compete. And I will make certain that my vote is counted.

On Immigration: No amnesty; secure borders are a national security issue

The US is a nation built of immigrants, seeking opportunity and freedom. However, our current system of immigration is broken. Illegal and undocumented immigrants are flooding into our country in massive numbers. We must control immigration and secure our borders, as a national security issue. Additionally, illegal immigration is imposing a huge financial burden on the American economy. I do not support granting amnesty to people who have broken the law.

On Social Security: No privatizing nor dismantling

This contract between the generations is inarguably the most successful social program ever implemented in the history of the US. Yet the Bush Administration wants to dismantle Social Security by placing large portions of its funds in the hands of Wall Street executives. They want to privatize Social Security and risk the retirement that millions of American seniors have earned and make billions of dollars for themselves while doing it. I will never support these dangerous and expensive giveaways.

On War & Peace: Change course in Iraq but do not leave a political vacuum

We must change the course in Iraq because the status quo is unacceptable. We must begin setting clear benchmarks to measure success in the rebuilding of Iraq. We cannot leave a political vacuum in Iraq and threaten to further destabilize the entire region. We need new leadership to offer clear alternatives to the current approach of staying the course. We must win this war and get our troops home.
