On Abortion: Supports embryonic stem cell research

Embryonic stem cell research offers tremendous promise to end the suffering of millions of patients with cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases and disorders. I support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

On Abortion: I support a woman’s right to choose

I support a woman’s right to choose, and I will vote to protect it. Let’s face it, no one likes abortions. The best thing we can do is provide meaningful education and prevention, and to ensure that working families make living wages and have access to affordable health care and affordable child care so that women and young families do not have to choose between poverty and abortion.

On Education: Public education played integral part in US power

Our public education has played an integral part in allowing the United States of America to become the world’s sole superpower. Our colleges have been second to none, drawing talent from all over the world to benefit from our institutions.

On Energy & Oil: US needs a “sustainable energy” plan

The United States needs a “sustainable energy” plan because our economy depends on it, our environmental health requires it, and our position as a global leader requires it. We need a new model for the future and leadership on this issue now, before our reliance on fossil fuels results in a catastrophic collapse of the economy or the environment, or a large scale international conflict over the world’s oil reserves.

On Health Care: Medicare Part D mostly helps insurance industry

The Medicare Part D prescription drug program has turned out to be a complicated boondoggle which appears to primarily help the insurance industry and the drug companies. It needs a major overhaul.

On Homeland Security: Pre-emptive war should never be necessary

Our foreign policy has been hijacked by fears resulting from the terrible attacks on 9/11. Terrorists must be dealt with harshly and without compromise or negotiation. However, our foreign policy needs to be guided by a rational assessment of what actions will result in a more secure homeland. Pre-emptive war should never be necessary. The credibility of our nation is now in grave doubt when making claims of terrorist threat or weapons of mass destruction.

On Immigration: US needs a federal immigration policy; currently lacking

The problem with our immigration policy is that the Federal government doesn’t have one. For too long our government has failed to secure our borders, allowing easy access for illegal immigration, and having little to no enforcement at the workplace. No wonder people are frustrated and demanding action.

On Social Security: $712 billion for private accounts puts future in danger

The future of Social Security is in danger. Just when we thought the Republicans were backing off, we find that the President included $712 billion for ‘private accounts’ in the current budget. Social Security, which keeps half of America’s seniors from falling into poverty, must not be transformed into a risky personal investment scheme. It is the mainstay of our social ‘safety net,’ and its health and security must be a top priority.
