On Abortion: Pro-life from conception until natural death

In keeping with my personal faith and family values, I have consistently opposed abortion and will continue to do so in Congress. I believe that being pro-life means promoting life at every stage, from conception until natural death. I will always vote according to my faith and my conscience on life issues.

On Budget & Economy: $8 trillion deficit is a hidden tax on all of us

In the last six years, the federal budget surplus has disappeared and been replaced by an enormous deficit, adding to a national debt now estimated at over $8 trillion. In Congress, I will be an independent voice for fiscal responsibility, resisting pressure on both sides of the aisle to run up huge deficits. In effect, these deficits are a hidden tax on all of us and we will pay the price for today’s spending if we don’t switch gears now and adopt a common-sense, fiscally conservative approach.

On Energy & Oil: Incentives for hydrogen, ethanol and bio-diesel

America sends billions every year to the Middle East because of our dependence on foreign oil. Energy independence is critical for our national security, our environment, and our economy. It is time to stop looking toward the Middle East for oil and start looking here at home. I will bring common sense solutions to Congress that focus on providing incentives to use hydrogen energy, plus ethanol and bio-diesel products made from corn and soy grown right here in our district.

On Free Trade: Oppose CAFTA; support fair international trade

    I will:
  1. Support international trade that is fair and free, with labor and environmental standards in every agreement.
  2. Vote against trade agreements that ship good-paying jobs overseas, such as the recent trade agreements with Chile and Singapore and CAFTA.
  3. Promote increased technical training and education for our young people.
  4. Vote for the best interests of the working men and women of Northern Indiana, and not for a partisan political agenda or extreme point of view.

On Government Reform: Fight for real campaign finance reform & more transparency

Washington is mired in a culture of corruption. Cunningham and Delay resigned in disgrace, but the corruption continues. When the special interests take over and government turns into a Washington insider game, our values get left behind. I will be an independent voice in the House. That means fighting for real campaign finance reform, greater transparency on Capitol Hill, and more stringent enforcement of the House Code of Ethics.

On Gun Control: Support the Second Amendment

I believe in and support the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees us the right to possess guns.

On Health Care: Expand the availability of health insurance

Every American should have access to quality, affordable healthcare. I will stand up to the big pharmaceutical and insurance companies to bring health care costs back to normal. This begins with an HMO Patient’s Bill of Rights that allows patients and doctors, not insurance companies, to make medical decisions.

We must also expand the availability of health insurance. Indiana has over 860,000 uninsured citizens--we can do better. We must demand healthcare as a basic American value.

On Health Care: Medicare Part D plan is huge giveaway to drug companies

Today’s Medicare Part D plan was a huge giveaway to the drug companies--which is no surprise, since drug industry lobbyists wrote the original legislation. I will work to reform Medicare Part D and advocate the following plan: Eliminate the sign-up period to allow seniors to continuously enroll Give Medicare the power to negotiate lower drug prices Allow re-importation of safe, FDA-approved drugs from Canada Eliminate the “Donut Hole” gap in coverage

On Homeland Security: Develop America’s defense and intelligence for 21st century

When I am in Congress, I will be a strong supporter of national security priorities and the ongoing war on terror. I will hold the administration accountable for its duty to support our troops with good planning and adequate resources. And I will work to develop America’s defense and intelligence resources to address 21st century threats.

On Immigration: I do not support amnesty

I do not support amnesty. Border security is crucial to solving the immigration problem and is a serious national security concern. I support more border agents, increased funding for surveillance and fencing that will prevent immigrants from illegally entering our country. I also support enforcing employment law which this administration has failed to do. For too long, this Congress has talked about immigration & failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform. That’s why we need change in Washington.

On Jobs: Existing trade policies export jobs

Every day we hear news of another company closing its doors in Indiana and moving to Mexico, China or elsewhere. Existing trade policies export jobs and import economic weakness and heartache for working families. Standing for fair trade means standing up for American workers and voting against trade agreements that pit American workers against workers in countries with no labor or environmental laws - it’s not a fair fight.

On Social Security: Opposes any plan that tries to privatize & recklessly gamble

Social security is vital to millions of seniors and should be a guaranteed benefit. I will not support any plan that tries to privatize Social Security. I will not allow any person, political party, or special interest group to recklessly gamble with your Social Security benefits. I will work tirelessly to insure that Social Security remains financially sound and stable so that all of us, young and old, receive the benefits to which we are entitled.

On War & Peace: Conclude the Iraq mission and bring our soldiers home

Nothing can change the series of mistakes this administration has made in Iraq, but we can and must make tough decisions about the future so that we can successfully conclude the mission and bring our soldiers home. Congress must insist on a clearly defined plan to complete the Iraq mission.
