On Abortion: Stand firm in support of a woman’s right to choose

A woman’s right to choose is under assault in the Republican-led Congress. George Bush is simply wrong when he says Roe v. Wade “was a reach” and “overstepped constitutional bounds.” Consistent with Roe v. Wade, our society must stand firm in its support of a woman’s right to choose. A woman’s decision about whether to carry her pregnancy to term is a private one - to be made, ideally, after consultation with her doctor and with the benefit of counseling that is provided in a non-coercive setting.

On Energy & Oil: Long-term energy policy inclding alternative energy

Congress should commit to passing a long-term energy policy for America’s future that concentrates action in the following five areas:
  1. Consider Methods to deliver short-term price relief;
  2. Redirect corporate tax breaks benefiting large oil to consumers;
  3. A National project of developing alternative energy;
  4. Modernize our electricity distribution system; and
  5. Creating a global strategy for energy development.

On Health Care: Supports “Enhance and Expand” health care reform

I support an “Enhance and Expand” plan for health care reform, which seeks to enhance the three major components of our current health care system - Medicaid, Medicare and employer-based coverage - and expand them to cover the 46 million people that are now without coverage. Put simply:

On Immigration: Fair path to citizenship instead of criminalization

As a world leader, America ought to have a fair path to citizenship that honors our proud immigrant past and promotes our promising immigrant future. Immigration reform could and should create secure borders and employer accountability while preserving the openness of our democracy.

In December, the House GOP passed legislation that would criminalize immigration. There are those in Washington who want to treat an illegal immigrant as a felon punishable by a full year in prison. Even worse, George Bush wants to criminalize giving humanitarian aid to immigrant families.

The current system is a blueprint for exploitation of workers, both foreign-born and native, and is feeding a multimillion dollar illegal enterprise at the US-Mexico border. America deserves better. We must expand the channels for legal entry.

On War & Peace: Start planning Iraq disengagement immediately

It is long overdue for the Bush Administration to provide Congress and the American people with a concrete plan for bringing our troops home. The Democratic leadership in Congress must take action immediately - that means today - by petitioning the President to deliver two proposed disengagement plans for Iraq: one that would bring our troops home within six months; the other that would bring them home within twelve months. As long as the Defense Department resists providing concrete scenarios for disengaging our troops, it is impossible to evaluate the risks and benefits of any particular course of action. The Bush Administration must get its head out of the Iraqi sand and offer the American people a meaningful plan for bringing our troops home. An effective plan must embrace the following components:
