On Abortion: I have always been pro-life

I have always been pro-life, and I am glad that the pendulum is finally swinging back to common sense on this vital issue. More and more Americans are coming to realize that a society that fails to protect the most vulnerable is not a healthy society at all. I support efforts in our state legislature and in Congress to prohibit partial birth abortion and to require parental notification when minors seek abortions. I am hopeful that one day soon the courts will re-examine and reverse Roe v. Wade.

On Education: Keep activist judges from banning school prayer

I have faith in Oklahoma, in America and in God That faith is at the root of my philosophy of what government ought to be and do. I believe faith is the firm foundation our nation was built upon. I am pro-life, and I believe activist judges who have tried to ban prayer, Christmas and even the Pledge of Allegiance in schools and public places are wrong. The First Amendment assures freedom OF religious expression not freedom FROM it.

On Energy & Oil: Fewer regulations on our plentiful hydrocarbon reserves

Despite the current challenge of meeting the nation’s demand for energy, there are still rich and plentiful reserves of hydrocarbons in North America and elsewhere that, if produced, could help meet America’s energy needs well into the future. However, unnecessarily burdensome restrictions promoted by environmental extremists are preventing exploration and production in areas that hold great potential for both oil and natural gas production.

On Families & Children: Efforts to redefine marriage hurt families & society

The family is the bedrock foundation of a free and healthy society. I believe we must reaffirm two fundamental values:

Value one defines what a family is... and that begins with a marriage between a man and woman. I oppose efforts to redefine marriage, an institution that has endured and worked for thousands of years.

Value two concerns every family’s hopes for a secure future. That includes lasting reforms to eliminate the marriage penalty and implement a flatter tax code to benefit ALL families.

On Free Trade: Fair trade means don’t fight with one arm behind our back

I believe in free trade but I also believe that in this world economy, we must make sure trade with countries like China and other emerging economies is also fair. We live in a competitive world economy and we cannot be expected to fight with one arm tied behind our back.

On Gun Control: Right to bear arms is in Constitution for a good reason

I believe that the basic freedoms assured by our Constitution, including speech, religion, assembly AND the right to keep and bear arms--are there for a good reason, and must be defended against those who would threaten them.

The Second Amendment means exactly what it says, and I will defend the right of every law-abiding citizen to own guns. Responsible gun ownership is a basic right, and I will never vote for legislation that abridges that right.

I am a member in good standing with the NRA.

On Immigration: National Guard and fences on the border

Q: How do we accomplish border security?

A: I think the President’s decision to send National Guard troops to our southern border was a good first start. But we need more than manpower. We should build physical barriers such as fences and walls where necessary. We cannot grant amnesty to those who are here illegally. The rule of law must prevail. We should not offer special privileges like in-state college tuition to people here illegally. We must insist on assimilation.

On Tax Reform: Shore up economy by making President’s tax cuts permanent

I believe the first step toward shoring up our economy is to make the President’s tax cuts permanent. They did exactly what they were designed to do...jump-start our economy. They should remain in place to serve as a further catalyst for economic growth.

On War & Peace: Timeline for withdrawal sends wrong signal to insurgents

I believe democracy will prevail in Iraq and that America’s role in the process is just and right. Ultimately the Iraqi people themselves will win democracy. But as Americans, I believe we must continue our role in this War on Terror and be united as we support our troops and our President. Some have suggested we set a timeline for withdrawing American forces from Iraq. This would be a mistake. It sends a signal to the insurgents that we are less than fully committed to the cause.

On Welfare & Poverty: Partner with faith institutions to help those in need

My faith is at the root of my philosophy of what government ought to be and do. I believe that our faith institutions can and should be able to work in partnership with government and other institutions to help those in need.

I have faith in our young people. I see their hopes and dreams in the eyes of my own two children, and I want to work to make sure they have every opportunity to succeed.
