Georgia 2008 Democratic Senate Primary Debate: on Energy & Oil

Dale Cardwell: End our dependence on foreign oil with wind & solar

Q: What about suspending the gas tax?

A: It’s like feeding your children candy instead of roast beef. I’ve been behind the lines of power in government. There are giant multinational corporations who tell elected officials how they can and can’t vote. We need to start with renewable energy like wind and solar and end our dependence on foreign oil.

Dale Cardwell: Invest billions to help clean energy entrepreneurs

The most patriotic thing we could have done on September 12th would have been a move for conservation. We should have led to the way to independence on foreign oil. The oil companies own 68 million acres of leases on and offshore of the United States. They’re making tons of money selling oil being drilled in Saudi Arabia. We need to invest billions to help clean energy entrepreneurs.

Jim Martin: Supports cap and trade system to reduce carbon emissions

It’s a shame the Senate didn’t vote for a cap and trade system for carbon emissions. The Republicans blocked that issue. We need to look at the U.S. as a leader on this issue. We can solve this problem for the world and it’s a great opportunity for new economic development.

Rand Knight: Tackle energy dependence to reduce terrorist support

We’ve got to tackle the energy challenge; get off our dependence on foreign oil; and choke off the support we’re giving to terrorists in the Middle East. If we invest in clean, renewable energy, we can create jobs & cut energy costs. We’re talking about more than the price at the tank but also the price of makeup & plastics. Everything we touch somehow involves the cost of energy. If we tackle these energy problems we will reward ourselves with national security and economic security here in Georgia.
