On Budget & Economy: Now is not the time to raise taxes

Our state is not immune to budget gaps and our revenue--largely reliant on a sales tax--is down significantly, resulting in the largest budget gap in state history.

The proposed budget will close the projected shortfall without raising taxes.

Now is not the time to be raising taxes on our residents and businesses. The state must squeeze every ounce of value from each taxpayer dollar while maintaining our priorities of protecting families and children the best we can.

On Environment: One step closer to creating Wild Sky Wilderness Area

The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted to create the Wild Sky Wilderness Area. As an avid hiker and lover of the outdoors, I could not be more pleased by today's news that we are one step closer to protecting over 100,000 acres of wilderness in Snohomish County.

The tireless efforts may lead to the first wilderness preservation action in Washington state in decades, and it's my sincere hope that future generations will be able to experience this region as it exists today.

On Immigration: Supports guest workers and earned legalization

At least 60 percent of the agriculture industry workforce is immigrant labor. Our growers need to know that there will be workers available to pick the crops. A modernized and efficient guest worker program is an appropriate tool to ensure the availability of farm labor. This is why I support the federal AgJOBS bill, which will provide reliable access to labor and at the same time protect guest workers from labor abuses. I am also in favor of an opportunity for earned legalization.
