On Drugs: National model in the war in methamphetamine

In 2004, the governor approved a law that would soon become a national model in the war in methamphetamine. By restricting over-the-counter sales of a key meth ingredient, pseudoephdrine, Gov. Henry helped shut down clandestine meth labs across the state Because of its high success rate, dozens of other states and the federal government copied Oklahoma’s law, which was also won praise from the US drug czar.

On Education: Build the best possible public schools & universities

With an eye on the future, Gov. Henry has worked to build the best possible public schools and universities to serve Oklahoma families. He’s delivered more resources to classrooms and college campuses in addition to embarking on a four-year effort to raise teacher pay to the regional average. For the state’s youngest citizens, the governor has helped improve access to early childhood education.

On Tax Reform: Implemented two largest tax cuts in state history

Gov. Henry has implemented both targeted and broad-based tax relief throughout his time in office, including the two largest tax cuts in state history. In June 2006, Governor Henry signed legislation that will decrease the personal income tax rate from 6.25% to 5.5% over three years, with further decreases possible if the economy remains strong. That legislation also raises Oklahoma’s standard deduction to the federal level, giving a boost to middle-income Oklahomans, and eliminates the death tax.

On Tax Reform: Maintain income tax

Henry’s message included a promise to fight for a state lottery to raise money for education and to oppose changing from a tax system that relies on an income tax to a system that relies more heavily on sales tax. “This plan to eliminate the income tax and replace it with a tax on consumption will favor the wealthy and hurt average Oklahoma working families and small businesses?not to mention increasing the amount of tax dollars Oklahomans send to the federal government by more than $300 million.”

On Gun Control: Protect gun ownership

“Gaining the support of the Oklahoma Rifle Association is further proof of our connection with the people of Oklahoma,” said Henry. “The ORA supports our campaign not only because I am an advocate for gun rights, but because I am the strongest leader on issues important to the working families of Oklahoma.” Henry, a member of the National Rifle Association, received “A+” ratings from the ORA and the NRA over his ten-year career in the Oklahoma State Senate.
