Survey of Gubernatorial campaign websites, 2001-2009: on Budget & Economy

Jon Corzine: My 1st priority--& 2nd & 3rd--is to get thru economic crisis

Our best days lie ahead--so Governor Corzine has said many times. How does he know? Because he's seen the plan--in fact, he wrote it. Over the next four years, the governor will build upon the successes his administration has already achieved in reigning in irresponsible spending and accounting practices on the one hand and focusing smart investments to improve quality of life on the other.

With our economic stimulus program, which was the first introduced in the country, and with the partnership in Washington, I think we are laying a firm economic foundation. When the economy turns, as it will inevitably, we will be in a strong position to lead the nation in recovery.

Tough times call for experienced, tested leadership. New Jersey needs a governor with the expertise to address the complicated challenges posed by the global economic meltdown.

My first priority--my second priority --and my third priority--is to get our state through these challenging economic times.

Kathleen Sebelius: Uncovered $159 million in wasteful government spending

Fiscal discipline and accountability have been the hallmarks of Kathleen Sebelius’ leadership as Governor of Kansas.

It began with Governor Sebelius keeping her pledge to perform a top-to-bottom audit of state government--an effort that to date has uncovered $159 million in wasteful government spending, and led to new efficiencies that produced over $1 billion in budget savings on behalf of Kansas taxpayers.

Mark Sanford: Limit spending increases to population growth plus inflation

Our number one priority has been and continues to be to cut income taxes for individuals & small businesses in South Carolina. The proposed FY ‘06-07 Executive Budget limited state government spending increases to population plus inflation, and proposed returning more than $380 million to South Carolinians in the form of a tax rebate.

With our unemployment rate continuing to lag the national average, we will persist in our push for a lower income tax rate for all South Carolinians so we can reverse this trend. We have effectively the highest income tax rate in the Southeast and the 5th highest rate in the nation and we believe that a lower rate will give South Carolina a competitive advantage when it comes to attracting jobs and encouraging business start-ups. Whether attracting new jobs and capital or looking to grow from within, we must remain competitive with other states (Florida has no income tax) and other nations (even Russia & China are lowering rates) if we are to compete globally.

Christy Mihos: Proposition 1: tax reform and local school aid

If you’ve followed my campaign, you’ve probably heard me talking about Proposition 1. When I’m elected, I plan on submitting it to the legislature in my very first budget. If the Legislature fails to act, I’ll organize and promote efforts to get it before the voters. Here’s what it’ll do:
  1. Set Aside 40% of Tax Revenues for Local Aid
  2. Stabilize Property Taxes
  3. Remove All Academic and Activity Fees From Public Schools

Tim Kaine: Fiscal discipline kept AAA bond rating

As Lieutenant Governor, Tim Kaine worked with Governor Warner to restore Virginia’s tradition of fiscal discipline and save its triple A bond rating. They brought state spending under control, restored faith in government, and led real budget reform that brought about needed investments in education, public safety, health care, transportation, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Tim Kaine: Progress economically via stable finances

As Virginia’s next Governor, Tim Kaine will be committed to furthering the Commonwealth’s economic progress. His Administration will build on the successes of Governor Warner, by keeping a stable financial environment, helping small businesses succeed, saving family farms, fostering competitive regional economies, tapping the strength of Virginia’s tourism attractions and preserving its natural resources.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Reduce billions in waste, fraud, and abuse

After taking a close look at California’s budget, it’s hard to make any sense out of it. California’s budget has become a patchwork of special interest give-aways draining precious resources from core programs such as education, public safety and health care. There are also hundreds of millions of dollars-if not billions-of documented waste, fraud and abuse in state spending. Our first order of business is to get California’s operating deficit-estimated at between $5 and $8 billion-under control.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Impose constitutional limit on spending and balanced budget

I will ensure that California government lives within its means-something working families manage to do everyday-and reins in spending to close the operating deficit. I support a constitutional limit on annual spending increases and an unambiguous constitutional requirement that the state pass a balanced budget, so that California never finds itself in this mess again. I will restructure our inherited debt, estimated at between $12 & $20 billion.
