Chris Christie: Bring back "Trenton makes, the world takes"

New Jersey was once a leader in manufacturing, and as the well-known tag line goes, "Trenton makes, the world takes." Today, the industries that once made NJ no longer exist and it shows in our unemployment rate, the number of businesses that have left our state, and the lack of good-paying jobs. NJ has lost 135,100 overall jobs overall and 34,000 manufacturing jobs in the last year alone. As a result, many middle-class workers have been forced to take lower paid paying jobs without benefits.

Chris Daggett: New Jersey is simply not competitive

In a world of increasing competition, New Jersey is simply not competitive. We were not competitive before the national economy crashed, and we are not doing what we need to do to make New Jersey competitive in the new economy that will emerge one, two or three years from now, when this Great Recession finally ends.

Jay Nixon: Require accountability for $500M in business tax credits

Jay will demand accountability from businesses receiving Missouri tax credits. This year, the state issued more than $500 million in tax credits. Some of those credits went to programs determined to be ineffective or inefficient. The current system lacks focus and accountability. Jay Nixon will see that the state implements strong “clawback” provisions into every tax credit so that businesses live up to their promises and Missouri sees a return on its investment.

Chris Gabrieli: Invest in innovative industries like biotech & renewables

As Governor, I will invest in innovative industries like Biotech and renewable energy to grow the companies already in MA and to attract more. I’ll also provide incentives to attract new companies, with one major condition: if they get tax incentives from the state, they have to create jobs here. If they don’t live up to their end of the bargain, they won’t get a dime from the state.
