On Health Care: Prevention emphasis could help curb health costs

The governor said an emphasis on prevention could begin to bridge the gap between skyrocketing health costs and public revenues, which are growing much more slowly. Freudenthal pointed to the states newly introduced wellness initiative, which expands Wyomings investment in its employees health in an effort to reduce unnecessary use of medical services, absenteeism, on-the-job injuries and workers compensation costs.

On Energy & Oil: Link development of wind power with electrical transmission

Gov. Dave Freudenthal urged stakeholders at an energy conference to keep transmission and wind power development linked as they move from policy decisions to on-the-ground action. Wind power and electrical transmission were the focus of the conference; Freudenthal noted that it is important for Western states to recognize that the two go together. “In the absence of transmission, the wind resource in Wyoming will go largely undeveloped,” the governor said.

On Jobs: Drought relief from water storage

In the early 80’s, I worked with Gov. Herschler to create the Wyoming Water Development Program. Our hopes for building water storage programs have not been fulfilled. Surely, this drought cycle will encourage us to re-double our efforts to build water supply projects - large and small. The federal government has resisted WY’s proposals, because they argued there was no need for water storage. As Governor, I will renew our fight with the federal government.
