On Abortion: Vetoed ban on partial birth abortion

Governor Granholm has vetoed two bills that would have restricted the right to choose. The first bill attempted to ban what promoters refer to as “partial birth abortion.” The second attempted to ban “judge shopping” by juveniles seeking consent for an abortion via judicial bypass.

On Drugs: Tougher penalties for drug dealers; more tools against meth

Governor Granholm signed legislation creating tougher penalties for drug dealers, including life imprisonment for drug dealers whose products cause death. The Governor also signed a seven-bill package to give law enforcement better tools to address the rapid spread of methamphetamine.

On Energy & Oil: 21st Century alternative/ renewable Energy Plan

Granholm issued an Executive Directive calling for the development of a 21st Century Energy Plan for Michigan. This plan calls for the development of an energy plan for the state of Michigan by the end of 2006. The plan will determine Michigan’s capacity need; renewable energy sources; energy efficiency and load management; and alternative energy technologies.

Making Health Care Accessible and Affordable: In the last three years, more than 298,000 Michigan citizens have gained access to health care and prescription drug benefits thanks to Governor Granholm’s initiatives.
