On Abortion: Abortion is wrong; reconsider Roe v. Wade

On Referred Law #6 HB 1215 Anti-Abortion “Personally, I will vote YES to implement this law because I believe abortion is wrong. This law needs to pass so that Roe v. Wade can be reconsidered by the United States Supreme Court. We’ve had 33 years of more information and more advances in medicine. It’s time to reconsider this interpretation of the Constitution, just like the court has done before on other very important issues.”

On Civil Rights: Marriage should be between a man and a woman

On Amendment “C” Define Marriage: “Personally, I will vote YES because I just simply believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

On Drugs: Never send the message that marijuana is OK

On Initiated Measure #4 Medical Marijuana: “Personally, I will vote NO on this proposal because marijuana leads to more dangerous drug abuse. Many crimes, some of them violent, are committed by drug abusers. Also, we should never send the message to our young people that marijuana is OK -- in any way, shape or form.”

On Abortion: Protect life under all circumstances; no embryo research

Some have raised questions regarding the appropriateness of abortion under certain circumstances: rape, incest, to preserve the life of the mother. To these questions I can only respond that taking the life of an innocent child is not the solution. Likewise, many will raise the issue of using human embryos for medical research. Another phrase for human embryo is human person, and again I must say that taking the life of a child is not the solution.

On Education: Internet sales tax to raise education funding

Out-of-state companies make millions of dollars in sales in South Dakota over the Internet, but they avoid collecting sales tax. Fortunately, the South Dakota legislature has already approved a “fix” for this problem, enabling a smooth transition to Internet sales tax collection. The moratorium expires in 2003. Thus, we can conservatively expect to eliminate the on-going deficit, reduce property taxes by an additional 5%, and increase state aid to education by about $250 per child.
