2010 gubernatorial press release: on Education

Sean Randall Parnell: Constitutionally protected Higher Ed scholarship fund

Thanks to the Alaska State Legislature's Joint Higher Education Scholarship Funding Task Force for its work to address a sustainable funding mechanism for the new performance-based scholarships.

While a constitutionally protected fund would be the most secure in the long term, a designated fund with sufficient capitalization to provide the estimated $20 million annual need for Alaska Performance Scholarship awards will provide a sustainable funding stream.

Steve Beshear: High national rankings shows that education is good in KY

The Prichard Committee's report, showing our state among the nation's leaders in 4th and 8th grade reading, is cause for celebration. Not only are we seeing significant improvements in reading skills, but we're also on track to break into the nation's Top 20 in 4th grade math, AP college credit, and pursuit of higher education within the next decade.

Scott Walker: Supports charter schools and choice, not one-size-fits-all

We need a plan to recruit, retain, and reward great teachers while implementing a plan that removes burdensome, one-size-fits-all mandates. This will allow good schools to succeed and help us focus our efforts on turning around failing schools. Walker will expand charter and choice options by removing enrollment and eligibility caps on schools choice and virtual charter schools.

Rick Perry: No "Race to the Top" funding; too many strings attached

Perry today announced that Texas will not submit an application for federal Race to the Top education funds. Despite tremendous education successes, Texas' application would be penalized by the US Department of Education for refusing to commit to adopt national curriculum standards and tests.

"Texas is on the right path toward improved education, and we would be foolish and irresponsible to place our children's future in the hands of unelected bureaucrats and special interest groups thousands of miles away in Washington, virtually eliminating parents' participation in their children's education," Gov. Perry said. "If Washington were truly concerned about funding education with solutions that match local challenges, they would make the money available to states with no strings attached."

Through Race to the Top funding, the US Department of Education seems to be coercing states like Texas to abandon their own locally established curriculum standards in favor of adopting national standards.
