Jerry Brown: Cracked down on violent gangs

As Attorney General, Brown has cracked down on violent gangs, and worked closely with local police and sheriffs to apprehend dangerous criminals, con artists and major perpetrators of fraud and financial crimes.

As California's Chief Law Enforcement Officer, Brown leads a team of special agents and dedicated staff who conduct criminal investigations, enforce firearms laws and regulations, and manage the state's crime labs, including the third largest DNA database in the world.

Matt Mead: Mandatory minimum sentences for crimes against kids

I support mandatory minimum sentences for those who assault or sexually abuse children and was encouraged that the issue was addressed in a law passed this budget session, creating a 25 year mandatory minimum sentence for adults convicted of first degree sexual abuse of children. With me, victims of crime are not a side note--abused children, the sexually abused, victims of domestic violence, all victims must always be center stage in law enforcement decisions.

Allen Weh: Aggressively recruit officers & resources for State Police

Just like a president's number one priority is to protect the people of this nation, a governor's top priority is to provide safety to the citizens of his or her state. In New Mexico, rural communities rely on State Police to help with their crime-fighting efforts. However, the agency has been neglected under the Richardson-Denish administration. As a result, it's under its authorized strength and lacks the resources it needs to help protect our rural communities.

As governor, I will strengthen our State Police Force by adding more men and women to its ranks. I will do this with aggressive recruitment while providing incentives for officers willing to locate to areas that don't have the amenities provided in our larger cities. Adding more officers is just one part of the solution. I will also provide the agency with the resources it needs to find and eliminate drug operations, stop gang activity and help the federal agencies protect our border.

Dan Malloy: Prevent crime; reduce gang activity; address recidivism

Focusing on Prevention: As Mayor, I created Stamford's Youth Development Initiative, which helped to prevent crime, reduce gang activity, and address recidivism. My Youth Development Initiative provided enriching opportunities after school and other times when juvenile crime otherwise peaked. I believe this model could be used statewide to strengthen communities across the State and prevent costly youthful incarcerations.
