Charlie Baker: Change direction on job losses and tax increases

Governor Patrick has long boasted his record of job creation as rationale for deserving a second term. [But] the state announced yesterday that Massachusetts lost nearly 21,000 jobs in the month of September--the largest loss of jobs in one month in nearly 20 years. And a further look at the job figures as they compare to the rest of the nation paints another ugly picture for Massachusetts:"Governor Patrick's record of job losses and tax increases is crystal clear," said Charlie Baker. "And given these latest figures it's clear what he will do with another four years--he will raise taxes and Massachusetts will lose jobs. The only way to change the direction of Massachusetts is to change governors."

Tom Foley: Focus on developing industries with high job potential

Connecticut's unemployment rate rose to 8.9% in January. Businesses and our young people see more opportunity elsewhere and are migrating out of state at an alarming rate. We can change this. Connecticut is rated one of the least 'business friendly' states in the nation. Our legislature keeps piling new and costly mandates on businesses causing some to leave and others not to come here.

As Governor, I will focus on attracting new businesses with highly skilled, high paying jobs to Connecticut. I will have the Governor's office and our state development agencies focus on the seven industries already identified as having high potential for Connecticut. The industries include:

  • Healthcare Services
  • Highly Engineered Manufacturing
  • Financial Services
  • Medical Devices
  • Alternative Energy Research and Development and Manufacturing
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Biotechnology

Rick Scott: 7 Steps; 700,000 jobs; 7 years

The career politicians in Tallahassee have done little to jumpstart our economy. But then again, how can you get our economic wheels in motion when you've never balanced a budget, been forced to meet payroll, or created a job? Face it, if the career politicians knew how to get us out of this recession, they would have done it already.

That's why it's time for a conservative outsider with real-world business experience to take charge. I am the only candidate with a comprehensive plan that will get our fiscal house in order, balance the budget, & create long-term, good-paying jobs. The plan isn't complex. In fact, it's very simple. And it's common sense. I've created jobs in the private sector. As governor, these 7 steps will create 700,000 jobs in 7 years:

    1. Implement Accountability Budgeting
    2. Reduce Government Spending
    3. Enact Regulatory Reform
    4. Focus on Job Growth & Retention
    5. Invest in World Class State Universities
    6. Reduce Property Taxes
    7. Phase out the Business Income Tax
