Andrew Cuomo: Replace Indian Point nuclear facility; it is too dangerous

New York is home to some of the greatest natural resources in the world. We need to protect our environment to make sure that we leave our State clean and inhabitable for generations to come. As Governor, Andrew Cuomo will continue to be an environmental champion, by pushing to find alternative sources of energy generation to replace Indian Point nuclear facility because it is too dangerous to continue operating.

Charlie Baker: Cutting local aid should be off the table right now

I served as a member of my hometown's Board of Selectmen, and as Secretary of the Executive Office for Administration and Finance in Massachusetts. I know first hand what happens to cities and towns when state government cuts local aid.

Politicians on Beacon Hill should stop trying to balance the budget on the backs of local governments. State government should be cut before local government--that hasn't happened. We have 7,500 more state employees than we did in 2004. That's wrong and that has to change.

I believe cutting local aid should be off the table right now. Long term, we need to offer cities and towns a more predictable revenue sharing model, one based on a defined share of state taxes.

I also believe that we should provide cities and towns with tools to help manage their budgets. I support providing cities and towns with health insurance plan design. As Governor, I'll put my experience to work, and promote policies in state government to help our cities and towns succeed.

Jill Stein: Casinos are job killers; one slot machine kills one job

Casinos are job killers because they pull money out of the productive economy. Each slot machine pulls enough money out of our economy to kill one job. The job claims for Gov. Patrick's casino scheme are fundamentally misleading because they are not taking job losses into account. Casinos mostly concentrate jobs in the three casino host communities. This will result in pink slips being handed out elsewhere. And taxpayers will be stuck with paying for a host of social problems caused by gambling addiction, as well as the huge government bureaucracy required to oversee gambling operations.

Nevada--which is loaded with casinos--currently has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. They are suffering a jobless rate of 14% while Massachusetts is around 9%. Nevada also leads the nation in foreclosures and bankruptcies. And Atlantic City, with 11 casinos concentrated within the city, has a jobless rate higher than Boston. Do we really want to emulate these economies?
