Cal Cunningham in 2010 N.C. Senate Debates

On Abortion: Keep abortion laws intact

The leading candidates for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination are divided on the death penalty but generally agree on other social policy issues such as keeping abortion laws intact and ending "don't ask, don't tell" in the military. Cunningham and all the other candidates said they support the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a woman's right to have an abortion.

On Civil Rights: End "don't ask, don't tell" in the military

All the candidates supported Obama's call to end the 17-year "don't ask, don't tell" ban on openly gay military service. They said it's wrong to force service members to essentially lie because they are prohibited from discussing their sexual orientation.

On Crime: Death penalty for the most heinous offenses

Former state Sen. Cal Cunningham said he believes the death penalty should be carried out for the most heinous offenses, like those involving terrorism or military-related crimes.

"It is appropriate in those narrow cases of the most extreme misconduct," said Cunningham, who served as an Army prosecutor, said in a recent series of interviews The Associated Press conducted with the race's most prominent candidates.

On Immigration: Stringent rules but with a pathway to legitimacy

The candidates agree on supporting immigration rules that don't send most illegal immigrants across the border. Cunningham favored a plan with a stringent method to become citizens, leading to what he called "a pathway to legitimacy."
