2010 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Homeland Security

Dave Freudenthal: $1.9M for Military Assistance Trust Fund

Some years ago when you created the Military Assistance Trust Fund there was some skepticism about its appropriateness. That fund has given approximately $1.9 million over the last few years to family members in the seven active duty Reserve and National Guard branches. It is working, and it is working well. It is one of those things that makes a difference for the men and women who continue to volunteer to protect this country. It is the least that we can do to continue that.

Donald Carcieri: Gratitude to armed forces for defending our freedoms

I'd like to recognize a proud Rhode Islander. Sergeant First Class Eric Blue was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, earned in Afghanistan. Sergeant Blue distinguished himself by his heroic actions during a complex ambush.

Despite being under heavy fire, he heroically maneuvered through the area to find and evacuate a wounded soldier. It is to men and women like Sergeant Blue that we all owe the deepest gratitude for defending our freedoms and protecting our country.

Gary Herbert: Pay tribute to those answering the nation's call to serve

I pay tribute to the many Utahns who have answered the nation's call to serve. Whether it's as a soldier in Afghanistan, a Utah National Guardsman in Iraq, or a humanitarian volunteer in Haiti or Ambassador Jon and Mary Kaye Huntsman in the People's Republic of China, we give them all our heartfelt thanks.

Sean Parnell: Revenue bonds for Veteran's Housing Loan Program

I am sponsoring a bill that would assure access to revenue bonds so the Veteran's Housing Loan Program will continue. Alaska has one of the highest percentages of veterans of any state. The Veteran's Housing Loan Program has been widely used by these honorable Alaskans. With legislative approval, the bond request will head to the 2010 general election ballot--where you, the people, can exercise your freedom and show your appreciation to those who have given so much to safeguard us.

Pat Quinn: Supports the Illinois Military Family Relief Trust Fund

We have a program in Illinois, a good program, the first of its kind in the country. And it's been imitated by many other states, but we have the best. It's called the Illinois Military Family Relief Trust Fund, provides financial assistance to all of ou Guard Members and Reservists. It's helped nearly 20,000 military families in Illinois with more than $10 million. I want to thank the people of Illinois for voluntarily contributing to that program through a check-off box, on our income tax.

Jan Brewer: Name Arizona as training site for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

We should do everything we can to see that Arizona is named a training site for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. At Luke Air Force Base; at the Air National Guard's 162nd Fighter Wing in Tucson; and at the Marine Air Corps Station in Yuma.

As a child raised on a military base --I have a special affection for those who serve in the armed forces. Every one of Arizona's military bases is critical to our national defense --and to our state and local economies.
