Phil Bredesen: Memphis Research Consortium: life science research center

The University of Memphis has been working for some time now to put together a coalition of life sciences organizations to work with the University to help grow its standing as a research institution. The General Assembly's approval of the UT Energy Campus at Oak Ridge has brought a long-simmering effort to a boil.

In the past week, 9 organizations, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Univ. of Tennessee Health Sciences Center [have signed on to] this Memphis Research Consortium

Donald Carcieri: The new I-Way connects life-science academics with research

The new I-Way has not only already dramatically improved the traffic flow between I-95 and I-195, but the demolition of the old highway will unlock over 20 acres of prime land. The opening of this site will accelerate the development of a new life-sciences economy in R.I. It will link together and harness the research capacity of our higher education institutions, with the complementary research and clinical capacity at our major medical centers.

Sean Parnell: $500M capital budget for 5-year infrastructure plan

In these tough economic times, I am pumping up Alaska's capital budget. Capital dollars fuel Alaska's economy. Our state dollars will leverage about $800 million in federal infrastructure funds for Alaska.

I have also proposed a five-year deferred maintenance plan to fix what we have got. We will invest $100 million per year for five years. Alaska's private-sector carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, HVAC contractors, and road crews, will have a dependable stream of work for years to come.

Pat Quinn: Ban texting while driving

There's a passage in Scripture that says, if you save one life, you save the whole world. And this year in Illinois, a historic year, 2009, for the first time since 1921 we had less than 1,000 deaths on the highways of Illinois.

Now that took a lot of work. It took State policemen on the highways, the Department of Transportation. We passed a law this year, a very important law that will ban texting while driving.
