2011 gubernatorial press release: on Energy & Oil

Christine Gregoire: Clean energy: limit global warming; be energy independent

With one of the richest, most diverse and beautiful landscapes in the world, we have an important legacy to protect. The health of our environment must be protected as it is essential to our quality of life and to the strength of our economy.

We need to lead development of a clean energy economy. We need to adopt comprehensive limits on global warming pollution, moving towards energy independence, and developing alternatives to driving.

Dave Heineman: Support pipeline but not at expense of environment

For months, Nebraskans have been clear about our position on the pipeline--we support the pipeline. However, we're opposed to a route through the environmentally sensitive Sand Hills. Through our persistence and determination, the State Department heard our concerns. Additionally, TransCanada has heard our concerns and has voluntarily agreed to change the route.

John Hickenlooper: Develop markets for vehicles that run on natural gas

Aggregating state and local vehicle purchases is a common sense way to close the price gap between traditional and alternative fuel vehicles. We are happy to participate in this partnership with other governors. Developing markets for vehicles that run on natural gas--an abundant domestic fuel--can help reduce dependence on foreign oil, enhance air quality and showcase how states are leading by example to tackle the complex energy challenges our country faces.

Jack Markell: Supports renewable resources connecting to grid

Delaware is adopting leading-edge interconnection policies that allow small renewable resources to connect to the grid without requiring redundant and restrictive review.

Integrating more clean energy into the grid puts more people to work, supports capital investment, and promotes a healthier environment. Through strong bipartisan support, Delaware has demonstrated repeatedly that we can strengthen our economy and improve our environment at the same time.

Sean Parnell: Oil and gas production will lead to a stronger nation

The Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission provides a voice for domestic oil and gas production while ensuring protection of the environment.

Many Americans are deeply troubled at what is now almost a $15 trillion federal debt. The solution is righ in front of us. We can regain our economic footing through producing more American energy. To boil it down to one simple truth: More American oil and gas production means jobs. Jobs translate into stable communities, vibrant states, and a strong nation.

Earl Ray Tomblin: I fight against the EPA to protect energy jobs

If the federal EPA adopts emission standards for coal and oil-fired electric utility stream generating units next month, WV could have a net loss of 38,500 jobs in the coming years.

West Virginians need reliable and cost efficient energy in a healthy environment. An adjustment is clearly needed for the EPA to review over 20,000 public comments submitted in response to its proposed rulemaking. If adopted in its current form, the regulation is expected to result in 1.44 million job losses nationwide.

Jay Nixon: Supports public/private partnerships to develop clean energy

Gov. Nixon helped break ground for the Missouri Center for Waste to Energy. The center will convert methane gas into electricity. The center will provide educational opportunities for students at State Fair Community College in advanced energy systems. This public-private partnership is an innovative and cutting edge approach to supporting a local economy, while creating a clean, reliable source of energy.

Jack Markell: Petroleum refinery reopening is a stride in jobs and economy

The reopening of the Delaware City petroleum refinery is the culmination of two years of teamwork. Now, hundreds will report to work here each day, better able to support their families and their neighborhood businesses.

The Delaware City refinery is a high-conversion heavy crude oil refinery with a processing capacity of 190,000 barrels per day. The refinery's production is sold in the U.S. Northeast via pipeline, barge, and truck distribution.

Robert Bentley: Supports off-shore drilling and the oil and gas industries

If we're going to take the responsibility of having to clean up our coasts and having to lose money because of any oil spill, then we ought to be able to get money from that. Bentley also noted the importance of energy production to Alabama's economy. We have had minimal impacts from our longstanding oil and gas development and production industries.

Sean Parnell: Open ANWR for development

Some of our nation's richest oil reserves exist along the coastal plain known as ANWR. It's accessible. It's extractable. And oil production and wildlife in ANWR are compatible. Oil from ANWR could help meet US demand for the next 25 years--or longer. Responsible development of ANWR would create hundreds of thousands of jobs across our nation, in virtually every state, because a secure supply of petroleum will create demand for goods and services, and lower the cost of doing business.

Brian Sandoval: Energy efficiency retrofits add value to buildings

Nevada has been approved for a DOE competitive grant to assist in energy retrofits across Nevada. The grant will help commercial buildings develop energy efficient retrofit projects, making it easier for businesses, contractors and energy suppliers to undertake these efforts.

Through this grant, we hope to provide a consistent set of resources & policies to develop a sustainable industry for contractors & energy professionals for the long-term, thereby creating jobs as the retrofits are accomplished

Bill Haslam: Supports alternative fuels to cut dependence on foreign oil

Haslam said after the [Southern Governor's] tour that if Tennessee can make a fuel that isn't subject to the whims of the international oil market, that is clean and domestically available, "that's a huge win for us."

Brian Sandoval: Renewables like solar & geothermal are big opportunity

There is no better time than now to identify the future of our renewable energy industry and transmission planning around the West.

We know there are long-term training and job opportunities in the energy retrofit industry, manufacturing jobs in the solar panel industry, science and research jobs in lithium extraction and technology development, academic and drilling opportunities for the geothermal industries, and many other opportunities that Nevada will explore.

Jack Dalrymple: Decrease foreign oil reliance, expand ND energy development

The growth of the energy industry is vital to the continued prosperity of our state and to decreasing our nation's dependence on foreign oil. By bringing together key industry leaders, we can identify ways to expand all energy sectors, both traditional and renewable, and continue to position North Dakota as a leader in energy development.

Peter Shumlin: Energy projects statewide: reduce consumption & create jobs

Vermont's use of stimulus funds has helped organizations statewide switch to renewable energy sources, implement efficiency measures, and hold down power costs.

These funds have gone directly to communities to save taxpayers money, reduce energy consumption and create jobs. We have used our federal stimulus award to create long-term energy savings for Vermonters and to speed our transition to a clean energy future.

Chris Christie: The future for New Jersey is in green energy

Gov. Christie said in May: "The future for New Jersey is in green energy and already we've put in place policies to broaden our access to renewable sources of energy, cleaner natural gas generation and ending our reliance on coal generation."

The Christie Administration has a proven record of commitment to secure the environmental and economic benefits of renewable energy in our state. The wind power movement is providing New Jersey with a unique opportunity to advance green energy as industry.

Peter Shumlin: Supports carbon cap & green jobs

Support a meaningful carbon cap and renew commitment to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

The federal EPA should recognize the success of RGGI, design any national greenhouse gas regulations consistent with its innovative approach, and allow state participation in RGGI to serve as an alternative method to meet any new federal regulatory requirements.

There is an opportunity to make RGGI more effective in capping greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the cap level.

Christine Gregoire: Transition Washington state off of coal power

Legislation was signed to phase out coal-fired energy production at the TransAlta power plant in Centralia. Senate Bill 5769 solidifies into law a collaborative agreement to close the state's two coal boilers--the first in 2020 and the second in 2025. The agreement provides a path to cleaner power while allowing the necessary time to provide stability to the electrical grid and to the community in Lewis County.

John Kitzhaber: Making renewable energy in state also keeps dollars in state

An economy of innovation is within our reach--a low carbon economy--one that leads the way in manufacturing and designing products that use less energy; one that rewards efficiency rather than excess. Oregon companies supplying Oregon companies--where communities capture their local value streams--their energy savings, wind, sun, forest slash--and drive their economies by keeping that value at home instead of those dollars leaking out into the world economy for imported energy.

Jack Dalrymple: Support for oil refineries expansion

I commend Tesoro Co. for expanding its capacity to refine oil produced in western ND. This project is another positive step that will help support North Dakota's growing oil production industry by expanding the market for oil from the state's gas and oil producing counties.

The project is a good example of private enterprise developing an opportunity that benefits both oil producers and individual consumers.

Tesoro's Mandan refinery processes crude oil that is transferred by pipeline from western ND.

Jack Dalrymple: Advocate for renewable fuels, blender pumps

The pace of installing blender pumps nationwide has been too slow and North Dakota is a good example of what can be accomplished when government and private industry work together.

North Dakota leads the nation in the number of blender pumps that offer mid-level blends and gasoline blended with up to 85% ethanol (E85). The EPA should do its part to expand market access for blended fuels by approving gasoline blended with 15% ethanol (E15) for use in all vehicles.
