2011 gubernatorial press release: on Immigration

Peter Shumlin: Bias-free policing: no stops for improper documentation

A new policy states that State Police troopers should not try to identify people whose only suspected violation is that they are present in the US without proper documentation. It also makes clear that officers should continue to investigate suspected criminal activity.

The revised policy will provide clarity for State Police. But, the local policy does not address the more serious issue--that the federal government has not developed a sensible and fair immigration policy on the national level.

Jerry Brown: Supports state aid to illegals' children and DREAM Act

Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement. The Dream Act benefits us by giving top students a chance to improve their lives. Under current law, undocumented students pay resident tuition rates if they have graduated from a California high school and affirmed that they are in the process of applying to legalize their immigration status. Effective January 1, 2013, AB 131 will make this limited pool of students eligible to apply for Cal Grants and other state aid.

Dave Freudenthal: We need more boots on the border

The Governor discussed the suggestion that the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution should be changed to close what some have termed a loophole; that children born in this country are automatically US citizens. Noting that both political parties have ignored the Federal responsibility with respect to the border, the Governor said they're more concerned about how many boots show up at the election polls rather than how many boots are on the border.

Freudenthal said, "This isn't rocket science. It's real clear that what you need to do is have a much larger presence on the border. You need to have some form of work permit that is easier for everybody from the sheep rancher, to the construction guy, to the hotel worker, for those companies to get ahold of and you need better control of the border. And they all avoid all of that because it's not going to be cheap, it needs to be done and employers are going to have to have some sanctions. Amending the 14th Amendment creates a distraction."

Christine Gregoire: Comprehensive immigration laws and border protection

I have been calling for a comprehensive federal immigration reform package since I was elected governor.

With Washington's $35 billion agriculture industry at stake, Washington growers need a federal guest-worker program that is responsive, efficient and affordable. I am pleased that President Obama is open to new ideas, and hope our lawmakers in Congress intensify efforts to lead a civil debate and move forward with a legislative action to fix our broken immigration system.

Pat Quinn: Embrace immigrants and their contributions to America

I can't forget Jakub from Poland. He came to America with his mom and became a Marine. He lost his life in Iraq. It's important to welcome people from other places. Just like three soldiers, all Mexican-American. They became Marines and lost their lives far away. When I went to their funerals, I remember the mayor of Aurora saying those who are bashing immigrants ought to take a look at the surnames of these Marines and what they mean to our country. It's everybody in and nobody left out.
