2011 gubernatorial press release: on War & Peace

Steve Beshear: Gratitude for troops who fight terror & keep America free

In the last ten years, our nation has continued to fight the war on terrorism at home and around the world. These men and women volunteer to protect our freedoms and willingly put themselves in dangerous circumstances because they believe in something bigger than themselves. They truly deserve not only our utmost respect, but also our everlasting gratitude.

Paul LePage: Celebrate bin Laden's demise, though war on terror goes on

The death of Osama bin Laden is a tribute to the resolve our country has shown through the past decade. The freedom we all share in our Nation and State has not come without great sacrifice. 57 soldiers with ties to Maine have made the ultimate sacrifice President Obama should be recognized for his leadership in following through with a mission begun by President Bush. While this does not mark an end to the Global War on Terror, it does give us reason to celebrate.

Terry Branstad: Remain vigilant in support of 3,000 National Guard overseas

I am proud of our president, and our troops, who never lost their resolve in finding Osama bin Laden and bringing him to justice. While the world is no longer nervously looking over its shoulder for this ruthless murderer, Iowans must remain vigilant in our support of the nearly 3,000 Iowa National Guard members deployed overseas. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with our brave men and women who remain in harm's way.
