Survey of Gubernatorial campaign websites, 2010-2011: on Abortion

Henry McMaster: Human life begins at conception

Henry McMaster has always believed that human life begins at conception and should be protected from conception to natural death. Henry will be a pro-life governor. In 1986, Henry became the first candidate ever endorsed by South Carolina Citizens for Life. As South Carolina Republican Party state chairman, Henry McMaster ensured that the pro-life plank in the state and national party platform was never undermined.

Andrew Cuomo: Fight for passage of the Reproductive Rights Act

Cuomo will fight for passage of the Reproductive Rights Act, which will protect the fundamental right of reproductive freedom and a woman's right to make private health care decisions. A woman facing an unplanned or problem pregnancy should have the opportunity to make the best decision for her family, whether her decision is continuing the pregnancy, adoption, or abortion. The Act will ensure that the rights of individuals to make difficult and personal health care decisions will be preserved.

Brian Sandoval: Pro-choice but late-term restrictions & no federal funding

I am pro-choice; I oppose partial-birth abortion, late term abortion and federal funding for abortion. I support parental notification prior to a minor receiving an abortion and am against transporting minors across state lines for abortions.

Dennis Daugaard: Protect the unborn; overturn Roe v. Wade

I believe strongly in protecting the unborn. Thomas Jefferson once said, "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government." I have consistently supported pro-life measures to reduce the frequency of abortion and to inform mothers considering abortion about alternatives like adoption. I also signed the petition in 2008 to place the "abortion ban" initiative on the ballot, so that our state could lead the fight to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Dennis Daugaard: Ban embryonic stem cell research

I support our state's ban on embryonic stem cell research. Even if this research could potentially improve some lives, it should not be conducted at the expense of other lives. I am hopeful that advances in the use of adult stem cells will make embryonic stem cell research a thing of the past.

Jerry Brown: Uncompromising champion of a woman's right to choose

Fighting to Protect Civil Rights: I have fought for equal rights and against discrimination throughout my career. I have also been an uncompromising champion of a woman's right to choose. I will continue to do so if I am elected Governor.

Matt Mead: I believe in the sanctity of life

Regarding abortion, I believe in the sanctity of life and am against abortion. But, as a conservative, I believe in individual rights and in those cases where rape or incest has occurred or the life of the mother is at risk, the decision is best left to the individuals involved, not to the government. I am against government funding of abortion. I fervently want every pregnancy to result in a happy, healthy child in a loving, supportive home.

Nikki Haley: Every life is blessed by God

I believe every life has a value and is blessed by God--my husband was adopted and my pro-life convictions stem from the fact I feel the blessings of that value every day knowing someone chose life for him. I see it every day in my two children as I watch them grow. My hope is that we continue to encourage and work towards educating that value of life to everyone.

Allen Weh: Oppose taxpayer-funded abortion and fetal stem-cell research

Dan Malloy: Expand state investment in stem cell research

As Governor I will expand state investment in stem cell research and other cutting edge bio-medical fields; these investments directly generate high-quality, high-skill jobs and strengthen competitiveness in this critical field.
