Henry McMaster: Define traditional marriage and strong families

Traditional South Carolina values are the foundation for strong families and safe communities. Throughout his career in public service, including two terms as attorney general, Henry McMaster has defended traditional South Carolina values. He led the statewide effort to constitutionally define traditional marriage as a union between one man and one woman. And he cracked down on websites that peddle pornography and prostitution. Henry McMaster will be a governor who champions traditional values.

Allen Weh: Strengthen family, no matter how it looks, except same-sex

We all want hope, happiness, prosperity and good health for our family, our friends and our loved ones. Most of us want the good things in life for the people we care about more than we do for ourselves. It is because of this that I believe the government, at all levels, should do nothing to weaken the family, regardless of what an individual family may look like.

Your family may consist of two working parents with adopted children, or you may be a single adult who is caring for an aging relative. You may be a single mother struggling to provide the best life you can for your family, working two jobs. Regardless of what your family looks like, I believe government should make policies that help you stay together, to be prosperous, happy and healthy.

I believe marriage is the union between one man and one woman. I am opposed to same-sex marriage as was defined in the recently defeated bill in Santa Fe.

Andrew Cuomo: Strengthen penalties for repeat domestic violence offenders

Every day, four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence. In New York alone domestic violence resulted in 91 homicides in 2008--a 25% increase from the previous year. We must bring domestic violence out of the shadows. Far too often, people believe that such violence is a private family matter since it most often occurs in the home, but this is a dangerous misconception. Domestic violence is a crime just like any other; only this crime is often executed on those individuals who are the most vulnerable. As Governor, Andrew Cuomo will work to protect those citizens who cannot protect themselves. He will strengthen the penalties for repeat domestic violence offenders, improve enforcement of orders of protection and guarantee that victims have a safe place to go by putting an end to housing discrimination against victims of domestic violence.

Jill Stein: Fund community youth programs for at-risk youth

When the Governor tells us that we have to cut community youth programs while at the same time we're granting a new, $100 million tax break to corporate insiders, it underscores that we need a change of priorities. We need to begin putting our communities first, because a healthy and safe neighborhood must be a foundation for everything else we want to accomplish.

I am familiar with the issue of community violence as a doctor who delivered care in under-served communities. In this work, I've learned that youth violence is not an isolated problem subject to a quick fix. It is a symptom of the abandonment of our communities by the elected leadership and by those who hold economic power.

One of my key priorities in running for governor is to heal the wounds of our distressed communities and to rescue the at-risk youth who may lose their way irretrievably if we do not act. I will restore all the community service funds cut by the Patrick Administration over the past four years.
