2010-2020 Mayor's Press Releases: on Budget & Economy

Tom Barrett: Invested in neighborhood business development

The Barrett Administration has supported neighborhood business development with a variety of efforts including Business Improvement Districts, small business financing through the Milwaukee Economic Development Corporation, and grants to support private sector investment. His Strong Neighborhoods Investment Plan is a comprehensive approach to addressing the problems and challenges the foreclosure crisis has brought to Milwaukee.

Phil Gordon: Responsible budgeting sets city up for future

Phoenix finished fiscal year 2010-11 with revenues right on target, expenses under budget and an AAA credit rating, the highest credit rating of the six largest cities in the US.

Despite one of the worst economic meltdowns in the history of the US, Phoenix maintained the highest possible bond rating, which has saved taxpayers millions of dollars in interest expenses. Because of careful planning & strong financial management, we are now positioned to lead this great city into the future.

Antonio Villaraigosa: Supports higher debt ceiling to avoid government shutdown

Americans cannot afford the consequences if the country defaults on its debt.

Mayors across the country unanimously resolved that an agreement must be reached to increase the debt ceiling and prevent the nation from defaulting. This can only happen if both Houses and both parties work together with the understanding that sacrifices must be shared. The only long-term solution to our economic crisis is a national investment policy that balances both the needs of deficit reduction and job creation.

Michael Nutter: Cutting government to balance budget without tax hike

City government today is smaller, spends less, and is more efficient. Because of the cuts we have made, we are able to make investments in essential core services without asking for any further tax increase. There are no tax increases in the budget that I propose today; the temporary 1% sales tax increase will expire in FY15 and the wage and business tax cuts that we suspended will be reinstated in FY14. We'll continue to cut spending.
