2010-2020 Mayor's Press Releases: on Education

Tom Barrett: Supports students' free digital access to online resources

I'm especially excited about Milwaukee Public Library's new LibraryNow initiative which represents an historic partnership between the library and Milwaukee Public Schools to provide free digital access to all the library's online resources to every MPS student in 1st through 12th grade. Our libraries have evolved from being storehouses of books to anchor institutions that help build healthy families and vibrant neighborhoods

Bill de Blasio: Pre-K and 3-K for All

Mayoral accountability of our school system has led to record-high graduation rates and record-low dropout rates, the creation of Pre-K and 3-K for All, and the ability to provide all of our 1.1 million school children with access to an excellent education regardless of their zip code. The buck stops with me, and I vow to continue fighting on behalf of our children and to continue working with all of our parents whose voices help improve our school system every day.

Michael Nutter: Public & private schools collaborate for student success

All of our schools--public, private, charter and parochial--need to work together to ensure that we are providing high-quality, diverse educational options that meet the needs of our student population. The agreement between the School District and our charter schools will provide unprecedented cooperation as they create equivalent metrics to measure student achievement and school performance.

Michael Nutter: Vigilant innovativion to improve our educational system

Education is the key to ensuring Philadelphians have a high quality of life. Education impacts so many aspects of our lives--health, finances, family, crime--that it is important that we encourage young people, as well as returning students, to succeed in school and continue on to college. We must be innovative and vigilant regarding ways to improve our educational system and to ensure our children are afforded every opportunity to learn.

Antonio Villaraigosa: Academic performance measures need to be more comprehensive

For over a decade, the Academic Performance Index (API) has functioned as a compass by which schools and districts steer their efforts to improve. However, the API has been hindered by its over-reliance on one determining factor--standardized test scores--to assess a student's achievement. It is time to hold schools accountable for preparing our kids for college and careers in the workplace of the 21st century. An index that takes into consideration a more comprehensive set of factors is needed.

Antonio Villaraigosa: Invest in our schools to reform Latino education

With a persistent achievement gap in schools across Los Angeles, we must continue to invest in and reform our schools. The Boyle Heights Promise Neighborhood Initiative seeks to create a better learning environment, decrease the dropout rate, increase college preparedness and raise the next generation of Latino leaders.

The five-year action plan to improve education and college preparedness and overall housing and health options in Boyle Heights will be submitted soon.

Antonio Villaraigosa: Parent Trigger: supports right to demand good education

Since day one, I have supported the Parent Trigger as a grassroots effort that brings communities together in support of strong schools. This law empowers parents and gives them a voice and a vote to demand better. I hope to see more parents throughout Los Angeles and California take action to set higher standards for our students and achieve better results for our neighborhood schools.

Annise Parker: $80,000 grant for after-school programs for 3,000 students

Houston's After School Achievement Program (ASAP) was awarded an $80,000 State Criminal Justice Planning Fund Grant from the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice. This grant funding will allow ASAP to fund an additional three after school program sites in the area and positively impact at risk students. Studies have shown that the hours between 3PM and 6 PM are critical hours for young students. In the 2010-11 school year, over 3,000 students are expected to participate in programming provided by ASAP.

Cory Booker: Founded the Newark Charter School Fund

Q: I hear that the state is cutting back on school funding, and that the schools are laying off workers. Are our kids going to suffer?

A: The City and school budgets are separate, and the schools are under State control. The Mayor and the Council have no say over school personnel decisions. There is no question, though, that we should be concerned about the education afforded to Newark's children. The Mayor has spent much of his energy and focus on improving the educational environment in the City. He has founded the Newark Charter School Fund, identified financial support for five new alternative schools, launched the Teacher Next project, create the YES Center, and runs the annual Mayor's Achievement Challenge.
