Bill de Blasio: 40% reduction in emissions by 2030

The policies laid out in "OneNYC 2050: Building a Strong and Fair City," will achieve a 40% reduction in emissions from a 2005 baseline by 2030--the breaking point to turn back the most irreversible consequences of climate change. The announcements today will reduce our emissions by the following percentages from a 2005 baseline:The above actions will account for a 23% reduction in emissions. Previous actions taken by the de Blasio administration have already resulted in a 5% reduction, totaling 28%.

Tom Menino: Aggressively pursuing solar energy opportunities for city

Boston was awarded $90,000 from the Department of Energy's Rooftop Solar Challenge. "I want to thank Secretary Chu for recognizing the unique partnership we have developed with the Commonwealth to bring clean energy opportunities to every doorstep in Boston. Annise Parker: Room for clean technology alongside fossil fuel jobs

Houston's "clean" or "green" economy is ranked 9th among the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program. "There is room for clean technology in a city with the largest number of fossil fuel jobs in the country and where oil is still king," said Mayor Annise Parker. "In fact, many of our local energy companies are also at the forefront of research and production on environmentally-friendly alternatives. Going green is creating good paying jobs for Houstonians and growing our economy."

Houston boasts an impressive list of green accomplishments. For three years in a row, it has appeared on the Environmental Protection Agency's annual "top 10 list" of US cities with the most Energy Star certified buildings. In addition, Houston has been selected as the site for Total Energy USA, an annual trade event that will assemble renewable energy, clean energy and energy-efficiency sectors in one place.

Jerry Sanders: Purchase no-emission electric vehicles for city

Last month, Mayor Sanders stood before the first public electric-vehicle charging station in the nation, and vowed San Diego would lead the way to making the purchase and use of no-emission electric vehicles a practical choice for everyday San Diegans--not just hobbyists and environmentalists.

To that end, Mayor Sanders announced with Car2Go CEO Nicholas Cole that they will deploy the first all-electric fleet of shared vehicles in San Diego this fall. The choice by Car2Go validates the city's commitment to being one of the first cities in the nation to provide a charging network that can support the widespread use of electric vehicles.

For those who've chosen a more walkable, urban lifestyle--but still need a vehicle for errands--this is an ideal solution.

Jerry Sanders: Harvest methane from the Miramar landfill

San Diego is committed to creative thinking on energy and environmental issues--and today's groundbreaking at the Miramar landfill provides the perfect example.

This project calls for a private company--Fortistar LLC--to install dozens of wells that will capture methane gas from the landfill. The new power plant will use the captured methane gas to generate almost half of MCAS Miramar's energy needs.

Everyone wins. The military reduces both its electricity costs and its environmental footprint by tapping into a renewable energy source. And the city makes money--an estimated $200,000 a year--by receiving a share of Fortistar's revenue from the sale of this converted methane.

The city will also save up to $2 million in capital costs because Fortistar will install the wells at its own expense. These are wells the city would have needed to install on its own to prevent too much methane from seeping into the atmosphere.

Michael Nutter: Supports solar projects in the city

By installing one of the first large-scale solar projects in Philadelphia, the City is demonstrating that alternative generation is both feasible and beneficial. Water treatment uses large amounts of electricity. Philadelphia Water Department is proud to use clean, sustainable power generated on-site. Because this project was so successful, we're planning to replicate it at other treatment plants.
