2010-2020 Mayor's Press Releases: on Environment

Keisha Lance Bottoms: Acquired land to increase public parks in Atlanta

Bottoms announced the acquisition of 12.42 acres of public land for a new park. "This fulfills a commitment I made, ensuring every NPU had a park," said Bottoms. "Adding these acres helps ensure our commitment to providing all residents of Atlanta a green and equitable city that allows for healthy recreation opportunities." It represents one of the largest acquisitions of greenspace in Southwest Atlanta--an area that has historically been low on greenspace.

Greg Stanton: A desert city like Phoenix must emphasize sustainability

Sustainability must permeate every decision we make at the city. As a desert city, we have a unique obligation to be more sustainable and this commitment will be great for our economic future. That's why I am reaching out to sustainability entrepreneurs like Miguel Jardin. Miguel founded a company called VermaSoks, where he grows organic food--in places that you could never grow food before.˙ Even in the summer in Arizona, it requires no digging, no tilling, no water.

Michael Nutter: Continuing to make Philly waterways best is a priority

We are investing to make Philadelphia safer, cleaner and greener.

Philadelphia was named an "Emerald City" and was the only city to have accomplished all six key green infrastructure actions, which include a long-term green infrastructure plan, retention standards, reduction of existing impervious surfaces, incentives for private development, a dedicated funding source and assistance to accomplish a green infrastructure plan.

Michael Nutter: Supports antipollution EPA regulations

The City filed a motion in in defense of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Cross State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR). CSAPR will reduce the transport of pollutants from coal-fired power plants in upwind states to downwind regions. Studies have shown that benefits far exceed the cost of compliance, and the longer polluters delay implementation of this vital rule, the longer Philadelphia residents will be denied the health and economic benefits of cleaner air.

Antonio Villaraigosa: Retrofitting buildings helps economy and environment

Mayor Villaraigosa launched the LA Commercial Building Performance Partnership, an innovative, Recovery Act-funded program that will help owners of commercial properties make their buildings more energy efficient. With commercial buildings accounting for 57% of the energy consumption in the City, LA has a large built-in market for these retrofits. LA is leading the way in finding innovative methods to promote environmental stewardship that also benefit our local economy.

Jerry Sanders: Convert wastewater into drinking water

Mayor Jerry Sanders kicked off the start of a year-long pilot project that will determine the feasibility of converting wastewater into drinking water. The project comes at a time when the city is exploring all possible options to diversify its supply of drinking water.

To perform the pilot study, the city built a test facility at the North City Water Reclamation Plant, where the city purifies wastewater into so-called "reclaimed" water that can be used for industrial, landscaping and other non-drinking purposes. The new facility will purify this water even further--in theory, into water clean and safe enough to drink.

The finished product will be pumped back into the reclaimed water system after testing, meaning none of the water in this pilot study will be put into the city's drinking supply. This year-long testing of one million gallons a day will provide scientific data that will help determine whether the process is clean and safe.
