2010-2020 Mayor's Press Releases: on Health Care
Tom Barrett:
Strongly advocated for improving immunization rates
Immunizations are among the most effective preventive health services. Ensuring high immunization rates is essential to reducing disease outbreaks and controlling the spread of serious illness in our community, and it is also crucial to preventing the
long-term health and economic consequences. Mayor Barrett has strongly advocated for collaboration between schools, day cares, and health care systems to improve the health of children in our community, including improving immunization rates.

Bill de Blasio:
Guarantee health care for every New Yorker
Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced his administration will launch the largest, most comprehensive plan in the nation to guarantee health care for every New Yorker. The plan will serve the 600,000 New Yorkers without insurance by strengthening NYC's
public health insurance option, MetroPlus, and guaranteeing anyone ineligible for insurance--including undocumented New Yorkers--has direct access to NYC Health + Hospitals' physicians, pharmacies and mental health and substance abuse services through
a new program called NYC Care. All services will be affordable on a sliding scale."Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it," said Mayor de Blasio. "While the federal government works to gut health
care for millions of Americans, New York City is leading the way by guaranteeing that every New Yorker has access to quality, comprehensive access to care, regardless of immigration status or their ability to pay."

Antonio Villaraigosa:
L.A. should reduce payments to retirees' Health Care plans
In five years, the City's mandatory contribution to sworn retiree health benefits has nearly quadrupled, from $31.4 million in 2005-06 to $113.8 million in 2010-11.
Villaraigosa urged the LAFPP to reject this increase, freezing the retiree health subsidy at its current level. Increases like the one the pension board is considering are steps in the wrong direction. We need to reduce costs, not increase them.
The proposal before the pension board will only drive us deeper into a financial hole. The board should do the right thing and reject it.
Villaraigosa pledged to work with the City Council to freeze the retiree health subsidy for all employees starting on July 1, 2011.

The new Coast2Coast RX card will be available to all Houston residents, regardless of income, age or health status. Similar programs in other cities have already saved cardholders an average of 45 percent this year.
Even pets and family members living outside the city are able to take part in the program. The card will be distributed free of charge and may be used at all pharmacy chains and most independent pharmacies in Houston and throughout the country.
The program will come at no expense to the city and will receive a $1 donation for every prescription filled. This donation will go to the Houston Health Department Health and Human Services
Foundation, a nonprofit that supports special public health and human service programs that have no other dedicated source of funding. The donation to the foundation will not increase the cost of the prescription.
