On Welfare & Poverty: Supports UBI as "Mayors for a Guaranteed Income"

[Stockton Mayor Michael] Tubbs in 2018 launched the Economic Empowerment Demonstration, otherwise known as the SEED Project, with one goal: give 125 people $500 a month for 18 months and see if improves their living situations. And it appears to have worked: People receiving the money spent nearly 40% of it on food; about 24% went to sales and merchandise; 11% went to utility bills, and 9% went to auto repairs and fuel. The rest went to a combination of medical expenses, insurance, donations, education and more.

Nearly two years after launching the program, Tubbs announced another milestone in the country's quest for Universal Basic Income: a coalition of 11 city mayors, collectively known as Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. The coalition include Tubbs, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Adrian Perkins, mayor of Shreveport, La., [and several others].

On Tax Reform: Urged those eligible to apply for Earned Income Tax Credit

Bottoms joined leaders from the United Way and the Internal Revenue Service to promote Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness (EITC). "Too many eligible residents are leaving money on the table by not filing for this tax credit, which could add thousands of dollars to their pockets through their tax return," said Mayor Bottoms. "This is a credit that has been earned by taxpayers, and we urge everyone who may be eligible to work with the United Way to maximize their returns by filing for the EITC."

On Immigration: Executive Order: end receiving ICE detainees

Bottoms has signed an Executive Order directing Department of Corrections to take the necessary action to permanently stop receiving ICE detainees. "As we work to achieve our vision of an Atlanta that is welcoming and inclusive, with equal opportunity for all, it is untenable for our City to be complicit in the inhumane immigration policies that have led to the separation of hundreds of families at the United States southern border," said Bottoms.
